    200x no start, PROBLEM SOLVED

I bought this 84 200x with the top end off of it. I honed the cyl and put in a new piston and rings. This is the third top end I have done on 200's, so I am not a noob at this. Everything is right and lined up correctly. When kicked over it will pop like it wants to start, but it just wont do it. We tried pulling it behind the 4 wheeler, but I am not fat enough to make the tires get enough grip turn even in 4th gear. The farther you turn the advance plate to the right, the more pronounced and aggressive the pop is (I was at about the 3 oclock position and it hit 3 times on one kick). I took the rotor out and put it in what would be 180 out (just to be sure) and it no longer fired. WTF is up with this devil machine? Any ideas

Your timing is off. Get a timing light on it, and try to re-time it as per the manual before you bend the valves.

Looking at your post, you have another carb you can swap in there for troublesooting?

The CDI grounds thru the off switch to kill the motor, maybe unhook that to start. Sounds like you might have another bike from your posts, maybe start swapping out parts, like CDI, ign coil, the one alt coil ((stator, Black/Red wire) pulsar coil? thats all there is I think. Ya might come across a bad connection/short while swapping. I know from other model Honda's the ign coil(spark plug coil) almost never dies. Oh yea, I found my newly acquired 83 200X with the red spark plug cap not screwed into the lead, I dyked off about 1/4" and screwed it in good, it was barely touching the center wire!

I had a 90 about two weeks ago, that the wrong advancer was on there and it had super weak springs, so at idle it went to full advance, ran like , took me a while to trace that down.

I was looking into that a few days ago, on a motor that has never run yet where do you start? "F" mark on compression stroke, and pulsar alinged? My pulsar was retarded, but I just left it alone and it started.

It is set dead on by the manual, all of the punch marks line up to the description in the manual. how can the timing be off?

It is getting gas to the cylinder as the plug i wet after 20 or so kicks. I cleaned the carb before I put it back on the bike. It had a 108 main jet, and a38 slow jet. All passages were blown out with compressed air.

Ill look at the spark plug cap tomorrow to make sure both ends are tight in the wire.

all it takes is one link on the timing chain to be out either way and you can kick it over all day with no start..

Id swear the circle mark on the cam gear is in prefect alignment with the v groove on the valve cover. I will triple check tomorrow, but I am 99% sure it is lined up right.

Thanks for the suggestions so far keep em coming.

You line all of the punch marks up on the rotor and advance weight assy. and line the circle on the cam gear with the v groove on the valve cover while the T mark on the fly wheel is in line with the slot in the timing hole. Then turn the fly wheel to the F mark and align the rotor mark to the line on the pulse generator. That is close enough to get it started.

Per the manual the way I described lining the pulse generator plate with the rotor is correct. It says the same thing I said in the manual. No where in there did it mention finding TDC with a screw driver as you described.

FWIW I tried the rotor backwards but it didnt make anything better. See post #1
