Oh here we go again! Seems like every week there's one of these threads.
All joking aside, they're all good! I've only ridden my first gen 250R, but judging by how good Honda got it with the '81, every year has to be better in some way than the last. There are gonna be die-hard fans of every year 250R, there's no getting around that... I love the simplicity of my '81, and thelover in me wants to tell you go buy an '81.
BUT, I think it all depends how much you are willing to spend. If your willing to pay for all the niceties of the water pumpers, buy a liquid R. If you want a lot of trike for little comparative money, buy an. You won't be disappointed either way. I guarantee it.
Rides I own:
'85 200X(old smokey)![]()
'81 ATC250R(Bassani pipe, Wiseco piston, Vesrah rod, and AMS offset rims)
'84 KXT250 Red(the new money pit!)
'96 KX125(FMF pipe, Boyesen reeds, One Industries graphic kit, etc.)
'85 KX125(vintage racer. Technically it was a practice bike)
'78 DT400(the lone Yamaha)
86...nough said. Latest is always greatest.

I gues it all depends on you want I supose, I have ridden most years of the R and each one has it's charms. The 86 is going to feel like a more focused machine, while on the other hand I have ridden what looked like a stock 81 with a pipe/silencer (turned out it was a 300 with some gnarley port work). the 86 was definently faster but the hopped up 81 was actually more fun, as you got to play with the rediculous power delivery and the tiny wheelbase clad with balloon tires.
Thank you for all theinput I am going to start looking for an 86, I'll have to misrepresent the truth and tell the wife it is for her![]()
Check the Phoenix craigslist. There's always a few on there.
I would just like to ride a 250R once.... any year! Never even seen one in person as sad as that sounds.
