Ya...but it still takes 450cc's for a 4-stroke to even compete with a 250cc 2-stroke (stock of course)
[20:55] <waterpumper> putting a racing pipe on a Foreman is like putting a high dollar bikini on a 400 pound chick...just because it fits doesn't mean it looks cool
Not at all. Maybe years ago: yes, but these new Lightweight Piston, High-Revving 4 strokes are replacing 2 strokes at the track one by one.
The only problem with the new 4 strokes is they wont last as long as the old ones.they rev so high they need reringed as much as a 2 stroke.
sure they run great and are fast ,but they just need to much upkeep.
Although I have been looking for a nice trail bike and have had my eye on
the DRZ 400.what do you guys think of them?I would rather the WR 400
or 450 but there is about a $1,500 price jump.
you wont be disappointed with drz 400....a friend has 2 and loves them....they are quick too...good luck

The 250R was discontinued because the engineers at Honda said the "400 will be ready next spring" but it took 10 years to work the bugs out!
I think you guys are couple years behind. The heyday of the 250r in competition is on the decline and has been since the 400EX when Honda finally replaced it with something nearly its equal. Since that time Ive watched the amateur MX 2 stroke classes decline to almost nothing, and the 4 stroke classes grow to dominance. In MX competition, the 250R has the edge (other than front suspension) but the 400EX covers the riders mistakes better, so less than perfect riders tend to get better lap times on the 400EX. Since that time, a handful of production quads have proven to be superior to the 250R in all aspects other than off the line, which is still pretty close. The stock Z400 will eat a stock 250R for lunch and spit it out on an MX track. Even the holeshot is too close to predict. Same with the Cannondale unless you want to get techincal and say its no longer a production quad. The Polaris Predator that I skeptically watched come in has proven itself, and left me amazed. The only major MFG which (until now) has nothing superior to the 250R was Yamaha. The R isnt moving out of first place. Its moving into last place. This becomes really obvious if you hang around the local track for a little while, and even more convincing with some price comparisions.
Well, Im off to the races with my 250R dinosaur!
well it took 15 years for the atv manufacturers to produce an atv to compete with the old 250r. So what if the new stuff is better then the 250r, its just funny that it took this long. you cant compare a stock 250r to any other new stock quad out there because its hard to find a stock R is mint comdition.Anyway, its the aftermarket companies that make a quad great, without them the R wouldnt be as domanant as it is. I think the trx 250r is the greatest atv ever made (next to the atc) and it will never die!!!!
To bad they didnt make trikes anymore, they would probably be dirt bikes with 3 wheels. Then they would kick the crap out of the quads!!

TimSr, you nailed it! Perfect. Great points and all very true. The day is here and its more than over, just have to say it LOUDER, you 250R folks have trouble hearing, must be all that noise those bikes make. 8)
i like the noise the 250r makes lol
Honda stopped making the 250R because of the consent decree act (a little known fact Honda was the main one involved with the government the other manufactures just played "follow the leader" Honda sacraficed Trikes and performance quads for a lighter tax tarrif on there automobiles being brought into America.) thats why 10 yrs later the 400ex came out. that and the fact the other manufactures were 15 years behind Honda.Originally Posted by TimSr
Now the 400ex may be popular among amature riders and the Z400 may be taking away from the ex but the fastest guys in the world still choose the 250R and other two strokes. they can choose anything they want but have yet to switch. in motocross/supercross two strokes still out number the four strokes and the CR 250R and ATC/TRX 250R are not to far apart.
