Hello, looking for tips on adjusting the valves on the 86-87 200X motor. Thanks
Ajust valves with engine cold. Remove the timing caps on the left side cover, and align the T through the small hole with the index mark, remove the valve adjust cover located just above the spark plug. Remove the camshaft inspection hole cap from cyclinder head and make sure timing mark on the cam is visable (facing up). If not visable turn the crank 360 degrees and realign the T mark.
When the T is aligned with the index mark and the timing mark on the cam is visible (facingup) the piston is at TDC on the compression stroke.
Loosen the valve adjuster bolts fully, move the intake and exhaust valve adjusters counterclockwise fully until resistance is felt, then move them clockwise the eequivalent of 1/2 graduation, tighten the adjuster lock bolts (torque 7.2-10 ft-lb)
Make sure adjusters don't move when you tighten lock bolts
1/2 graduation on the adjusters equals .003 in which is the specified clearance.
According the the picture in the manual 1/2 graduation is the distance between the long and short tick mark, full graduation must be the distance between the two longest marks.
Then adjust the decompression system.
TO adjuster decomp system:
make sure flywheel T is aligned with the index mark and is on the compression stroke.
Measure the free play at the tip of the cam follower shaft arm (FREEPLAY .02-.06 inches)
Adjust by using the nuts by the kick start shaft on the cable.
Too much free play causes hard starting, too little freeplay may cause erratic engine idle and valve damage.
Install the timing and cam inspection hole caps and the valve adjuster cover.
TORQUE: cam inspection hole cap 1.8-3.3 ft-lb

Check the clearances hot. No engine runs cold - Ive found old HOnda engines to have a bad habit of losing valve clearance when hot, dont know why, but Ive seen street bikes do it.
Metal expands when hot, so shouldn't it loose clearance?
