Should I buy a quad or stick with trikes?

There is an 87 Honda 250x ATV down the street from my house. My dad actually knows the guy. I'm ready to move on from my 110 for something bigger. I needed the 110 to learn on. I dont know if I should stick with trikes because they're usually cheaper, or get an older quad such as this. I couldn't believe it was an 87, it didn't look that old, but the exhaust is rusty, and the plastic has seen better days. I dont know how much he wants, but what do these go for? I think it might be safer for me to get a quad rather than a trike, but i'm looking for opinions, and what you think this quad is worth. Thanks guys.

These are purely just my opinion!
The way I look at it is this:
Do you want to get lost in the crowd ( Quads )?
Or would you like to be different than everyone else ( trike )?

3 wheelers will be lighter, cheaper, and take more skill to ride.
Just about anyone can ride a quad. It don't take as much skill in my book. Most will weigh more, cost more, ect.
Other things to think about also is:
Do you want the most manuverablity ( trikes ) ?
Or can you handle having to back up to turn around more often?

Can you afford to replace 4 tires?
or would replacing 3 be better?
Do you want to have to search for parts ( Trikes )?
Or do you want easier access to parts ( most quads )?

    Now look at resale value:
I have seen the price of Trikes bottom out and start climbing over the past 13+ years. 12 years ago I bought quite a few 350x's and 250r's for under $500 running in fair shape. The same machine now is 2 -4 times that ( some deals are still out there ). Also Trikes are becoming collectors items as well being rode.

Now on Quads resale price they sorta Tanked at about $800 - $1500 on average. The only thing keeping the price up now is the amount of people getting into ATVing. If the demand levels off I am betting the price for them will fall even more( it might not happen though ). Also I don't know too many quads being collected ( Quad Zilla and TRX250r's are the only ones I can think of ).

I could go on and on but won't. Now if you can afford to have both then you can find out what you like better 3 or 4 wheels. The bottom line is Go with what you like. That is what is going to make you happy. Riding something you hate isn't any fun.

I'm not sure what the TRX250 is worth ( Need detailed condition ). For what it's worth I have paid $300 to $1000 for like machines.

My opinion - Posting on a board to ask other people what you should do in matters that boil down to nothing more than personal preference has "lead me with peer presure" written all over it! Personally, though, if I had to choose between a 110 and a 250X, as a sole garage occupant, and had no other choices, Id take the 250X hands down. On serious trails, (what I call serious) the lack of real brakes, lack of suspension, and lack of power on the 110 would be a death sentence, and its got nothing to do with "how fast will it go". If it were a higher end model trike, Id have a different opinion, but a 110 over a 250x? Not for me, but you need to do what you think is best for you, and forget about what everybody else thinks.

I love my trikes but someday I still want a HONDA FOURTRAX 250R. Looks like you need about 3 to 4 grand for a nice racer like that.

If I had a choice...I'd go 250X. In my opinion, a 250 fourwheeler is more fun than a 110 trike anyday (thanks to my size) If you can afford both, then keep the 110 and get the X and have the best of both worlds. (sorta)

Thanks for your opinions guys. He wants $800 for it. He bought it for 2 grand a year ago, and admitted he was an idiot who got ripped off. He did what I plan on doing, ride it for a year and then upgrade to something new. I'm new to ATV's so I bought the 110 cuz it was cheap...$300. I learned a lot about it stripping it down to every last bolt. I figure with the money I put into the 110 I might as well keep it and just fork over the $800 since I can afford it right now. I do need something cheap with more power and suspension though.

There's an 85 250R on ebay right now for only $1200 and no one even bid on it But I think I'd seriously hurt myself on a beefed up trike

This quad is pretty beat and it needs new rear brakes, but it fires right up and for short money I think I might just have to try it out! I'll let u guys know what happens.

    well.......

Its seems like this post is turning into a 3 vs 4 war . I'm currently building up a TRX 250r which I plan on racing at the local flattrack . Over here in Nor. Ca. trikes are banned from all races . Sure they still drag them in the dunes but Moto x and flattracking they are all out banned . I would love to compete with my trike , flattrack it all of the time . Its easier to turn if you ask me . But none the less my hands are tied on this one .

I agree with howdy about being different from everyone else with a trike. I love going to my atv club rides with the Z, everyone does double takes when they see it! LOL

i think that if you are new to bikes and trikes, take a look at the places you mostly ride and ask yourself, is this safe riding for a pretty unexperienced trike rider? or would it be more safe for a quad? just my opinion.
