Can K&N filter oil cause engine to smoke ?

Hi There, I recently put a K&N oil filter on my 84 200M and noticed that the engine blows smoke at start up. I removed the air filter and there was a good blob of the red oil that fell on my finger, indicating to me that I might have over-oiled it and this was being sucked up into the motor and pushed through as smoke. This only started after I installed the K&N, which leads me to hope this is the problem and not the rings etc...

Anyone ever experience something similar ?

    Thanks in advance

K&N filters come way over oiled from the factory.I always clean them off once, and lightly re-oil them.

I have had several instances where the only explanation for smoke was the oil on the filter

after a good ride the excess oil will be gone. if your smoking on cold start up evrey time its more then likely another cause.when i clean my k and n it runs kind of crappy for a few minutes then it comes right out of it on my r.
