Are there any three wheeler specific junk yards? I kinda want to start one...

After seeing the thread started by jeswinehart about his recent trip to the junk yard, i am knd of curious. Are there any three wheeler specific junk yards around?

It disappoints me to see all those trikes rotting outside. The parts are getting rarer and rarer...and the longer the salvage trikes stay outside rotting, the less useable the parts on them become. The same goes for the trikes that are just sitting in peoples' backyards, woods, etc too. Plus, many of the trikes have the potential to be runners with minimal work.

I know this isnt realistic, but I want start a three wheeler salvage business...except indoor so they dont sit outside. The building doesn even have to be big, just have racks or something so they can be condensed and stacked to make the best of room. Maybe even do partial restos on the ones that have the potential to run again...just to get them running and riding for cheap so we can get more people into the sport.

Once again, I know this isnt very realistic. But how hard would it be to start something like this? Im a business guy and I realize that it probably wouldnt be very profitable. But as long as the business at least broke even, it would be doable.

just an idea..... I cant be the only one that feels this way.....

from what i've seen an read in ths forum alotta people already have their own personal 3-wheeler junkyards ... i've got 3 and 4 wheeler parts stacked all over ma shop and yard ... and thas just me ... i'm sure there's people on here that have so much stuff, they make my collection look bare.

MONEY thats what it takes, a freind of mine a few years ago started a bike and atv yard, and for many years did well, he got a small business loan to start to the tune of $25,000 that baught all kinds of junk and wrecked cycles and atvs, but what he didnt think off is the impact on the surondings, even though he was in the country, they have laws for keeping a junkyard, he ended up selling every bit he had to barly cover the fines he managed to get, just do all your research as best as possible before jumping into something. Also what other cycle salvage places are close by? here Steves Cycle Salvage, buys up almost everything from insurance auctions and salvage yards so much in fact that it makes it near imposable for anyone else to do something like that around here.

yeah, There are a some quads in the mix but I have over a 100 machines out there right now that are just used for parts.

i dont think it would be that hard. just money would be the problem. start off small, rent a shop for $1000 or so a month and buy some $500 bikes. part them on here, ebay and localy. later on buy a bigger shop and more bikes. or build something in your backyard, if its big enough and turn it into a junkyard, if you dont mind.

LOL,Don't think it would be hard huh', Personally it's all work' and too keep up with the demand is'nt a joke,either.Now if it's for your personal use,that's different ,but to sell stuff also,is and can be alot for a person's plate..Yeah it's got it's benifit's ,and money is deffinatly an issue.It also take's alot of time to gather up all the junk..Collection's are'nt just put together in a week or 2.Just giving my opinion!

Yeah, I understand the whole money thing. The issue with me its that I want to store the stuff inside. I would need like a steel building. I have seen indoor salvage yards for cars. They have these racks that they stack the cars on. Its like 3 or 4 high. So they can get 3-4 times as many vehicles in there than they would have without the racks. Plus, three wheelers are much smaller and easier to move around.

What are the regulations for having an indoor salvage yard?

I dont really see this happening to soon. Im just kind of brain storming right now.

Theres a place here called paradise cycle that has tons of trikes. The whole lot is covered in mostly honda trikes. Alot people sell them there brand new crashed atvs and they sell them pretty cheap. Im going tomorrow to see if i can find a swingarm to extend.

If you had a large say 3 car garage, and you built a lot of shelves, you could probably take them apart and store a lot of them in there. Its when you start trying to store half complete machines your going to run into problems. I know a guy in tucson. Hes got the market cornered on trikes. Hes got shelves in the yard and has them stacked 3 high. If the city, or neighbors complained, he'd be in trouble. His addiction started by buying machines at swap meets, fixing other peoples stuff. He bought out a few shops trike inventorys back in the late 80s. Its a shame, hes got so much stuff, that he cuts up the frames because noone wants them, He just sells them for scrap. Jim
