Question 200x revving wildly with choke off

I just picked up a 200x, the carb was cleaned by a friend at a small engine shop and it wouldnt start for a while, was squirting gas out of the left brass tube at the bottom of the carb by the choke plate, now it starts on full choke and idles okay, but if I go to 1/2 or no choke it revs up like its 3/4 throttle.... any ideas or advice???

The intake boot (the one between the carb and the motor) could be cracked. It's somewhat common and would cause the symptoms you're having. Check it out real closely.

Definitely sounds like an air leak. If that boot isn't cracked, lots of times someone who took it apart before used a screwdriver and gouged it up. Take a close look at all the mating surfaces.

could be as simple as the carb slide is 1/2 a turn wrong and / or the idle adjustment screw is screwed in too far.

If the slide is installed 1/2 a turn wrong it won't allow the slide to go down properly thus causing it to rev high.

that was the problem the first time, the slide in the carb wouldnt come down, we turned it around, and I backed the air mix screw out some more also and that helped, but im going to look for a leak tomorrow night, thanks for all of the help everyone!

I second Howdy, if the idle screw is turned too far in, then when the choke is on it is making it a little too rich for it to rev properly, and when taken to half or off, the mixture is back to normal and it will rev.

on the slide controled by the thumb throttle, there is a groove on one side that goes 1/2 way up and on the other side it goes all the way up, in the carb there is a nub on one side and the mixture screw on the other, which goes to which?

The side with the 1/2 groove goes on the screw side. The 1/2 groove should be slanted at a 60 degree angle or so, so when you turn the screw in and out it will push the slide up and down. The screw that pushes the slide up and down will be your idle screw. All it does is adjust idle. There should be another screw on the carb , probably towards the intake side, that is your fuel/air mixture screw that controls the fuel/air ratio when the bike is at idle. Dont worry about backing your IDLE screw out too far. I'd keep unscrewing it until it falls out, and with it out if your bike is still reving high then you know that the problem is elsewhere. Try that first.

Also something else look inside the carburetor with the throttle cable still attached and make sure that the slide is sliding all the way down and completely seating on the bottom. The throttle cable could have been misadjusted or misrouted on the frame during the rebuild and may be whats holding the throttle open. Does the idle increase or decrease when you move the handlebars from one side to the other?
Its a lot to do, but try that first and let us know if anything happens.

Btw, as a starting point, the AIR/FUEL screw (NOT the idle screw) should be somewhere between 1 1/2 and 3 turns out. To do this, screw it in until it seats LIGHTLY, and then turn it out the recommended amount of turns. I've never known a misadjusted air screw to make the bike rev quite to 3/4 throttle though.

Was the trike running just fine before the carb got cleaned? Did he do anything besides cleaning, such as jetting?

the guy I got it from said it ran, but smoke really bad, it was alreayd .60 over, so he had a sleeve put in and the stock piston put back in, then it sat for almost 2 years and the carb was full of varnish, its almost dark out now, but im going to go tinker with it for a bit, thanks again for all of the help!

turn the mixture screw all the way in then back out about 1 1/2 turns.
you do know where the mixture screw is, right?

so.. I looked for the air leak by inspecting the carb boot, not a scratch on it, so i started it and it was a little cooler out and ran not as high as it had been, so I got it in gear and took off, it ran perfectly... until I got it in neutral and let the clutch out, then it ran really high again, so besides the fact that it burns a little more gas, should I just forget about it?
