converting shaft drive to chain drive

I have a spare ytm200 engine that has been in a fire. It is shaft drive but I would like to convert it to chain drive. Is it a matter of removing a bevelled gear and replacing it with the sprocket, or do i have to change the tranny drive shaft? I'm looking to fit it on my honda bigred 200 1984. I know fitting this engine will have some complication, but my buddy and I have pretty much all the tools needed. Has this been done before? Will the sprockets line up or do I have to shift the engine to one side too much???? and all of that We're hoping to do this over a few 24's of beer, some deer sausages, and rye and pepsi.

To change a motor over will require drastic amounts of work. You will need to modify the output shaft, the center cases, and more. To fit a yam in a Honda you will probably need to modify the frame as well as all the motor mounts. It would be far less work to find a proper motor for the machine.
What I can't understand is why change the 84 200es to chain drive? The 84 Big Reds ( 200es ) was shaft drive.

i would imagine he would want to do that mainly because chain dirves are easier to work with and wiegh less, but for all that work i would stick with shaft drive

You would need to split the case and install a YTM 200 output shaft or weld a sprocket to the current output shaft as well as cut and weld the left side case so there would be enough room for the sprocket and chain. Could it be done with a lot of work it could but it would need a lot of work, I have looked into this so I could get electric start on my YTM 200. If you want to buy an engine for the 200M I have one that I would sell, drop me a pm if interested.

I'd take a shaft drive over any chain-drive unless it was a sport machine, so I could change gearing. Shaft drives are a lot less maintenance.

My honda big red is a chain drive. I cant remember if it is an ES. Ilooked up the vin# and it is a big red but chain drive. I didnt think there was that much involve in converting the ytm200 shaftdrive engine to chain drive. If the engine part is that much work, I might put the engine aside in case I find a shaft drive yamaha ytm and save up for a big red engine.

82-83 big reds were chain drive called 200e. 84 big reds were shaft drive called 200es
