how to reseat valves on atc 200

i am going to be rebuilding my top end soon (gaskets and rings) on my 82 honda atc 200, someone mention about reseating valves, should i do it, how is it done. the only reason for the rebuild is the gaskets are going (everyone leaks oil). it runs sound, no knocks, stupid nosies, and it runs at perfect compression. Plug is perfectly tan.

Have you seen the Service Manuals instructions for valve repair? Maybe some guys have good luck lapping the valve, but your not supposed to lap or grind Honda valves.

When I built the 250SX motor I brought the dealer the cylinder to be bored and the head. I provided them with 2 new OEM valves and asked them what they were gonna do to my head. They said "clean it up, we really don't touch the valve seats". It cost me 80$ for them to scrape carbon off my head and put in 2 valves. I was dissappointed that they didn't recut the set or something. I wanted my new valves to seal perfectly, there has to be some compression lost thru those valve/seat areas.

    Could have done it myself...

if it has perfect compression, why would you replace the rings? As far as reseating valves, I dont know why youd do this with a good running motor, but if the faces and seats look bad, depending how bad they are, you either replace them, and then lap them, or regrind your old ones and again, lap them in. lapping refers to putting a paste substance on the valve face and seat, then spinning the valve. The paste is kinda abbrasive so it smooths the surfaces and makes them uniform. You can pick up the paste at any auto parts store.

My 200X is getting new valves along with a .040 over piston and the old valves have a slight concave curve to the seat area. I can't imagine they were sealing very good at all. It had almost no compression at all. Infact the only way to start it was to pull start it and then it was so worn out it would blow oil out the exhaust. I'm going to lap them at the very least but hopefully I can find someone to grind the seats for the new valves.
