I'm looking at buying one in the next month to use the engine out of for my Tri-Z project. Is there any specific years I want to stay away from? Or issues I need to address right away?

I beleive there is a website called thumpertalk.com . go there and they have a lot of info on those 426s'.my friend has one.they need re jetted right out of the box i was told. and if jetted incorrectly, they are a bear to start.other than that it has been a real reliable machine.Originally Posted by Derrick Adams

Rob is correct, my buddy just got one, it was a bear to start. Put a bigger jet in and it runs and starts sweetly. Dont know much else other than its a monster for power.!!!!!
Are you mastering up a Kill climber???!!!!!Sounds like this would be it. You know it felt good when you climbed those hills in the valley.

I'd go with the 450 as there were lots of changes (74 at least, I think) and feel it is a much better motor with a easier starting drill.
A certain year 450 (or was it 426?) the clutch baskets were cracking and blowing up but overall they are good machines.
Fall with ANY 4 stroke motor and they can really suck to start sometimes but since it is in a trike that is not very often you will actually tilt the machine over like you would a bike.
Been on TT since 02, It is, in my opinion, THE BEST MOTO/ENDURO - 2/4stroke website there is, PERIOD!!
I think they have well over a 100,000 members now! www.thumpertalk.com
The 426 needs a cam operated compression release. I put one In a 426 for someone I work with. I could not believe how hard It started. You would have to get lucky to start It. Everything had to be just right, what a pain. After the hot cams exhaust cam upgrade, you could kick It over like a 250. Once I was able to kick It over I was able to adjust the carb & make It run better. It seemed to have great torque down low & was geared real high so It had plenty of top end also.

The ones I have rode seem to have held up well over the years. Not many show up at the dealership for major work.
Get ahold of 3wheelsforever (Virgil), he has a good working knowledge of the 426.
will the kicker clear the rear fender? they kick backwards.
my buddy has one in a trx250r and he had to make a flip seat. my friend that makes the aftermarket race stuff made a new subframw for it so the seat will just tilt back out of the way.

From personal experiance as I owned a 426 for a couple of years. First of all GREAT bikes. Awesome power and great reliability! Had mine for two almost three years and with just regular maintance, (keeping the valves adjusted is the big deal with these engines) All i ever did to mine was sdjust the valves, cleaned the air filter, and changed the oil, but most importantly beat the daylights out of it. The only problem i EVER had with it was, I sheared the key on the side of the crank that the clutch basket rides on. Fairly simple fix and I don't think you need any special tools to do it either. That also happened on all my buddys bikes. They all rode 400f's and 426's.
The hard starting is all in the rider, although the jetting could use a little tweaking but yours is used so im sure it is already set up almost perfectly. Now the starting method is a ritual and if you ALWAYS start it that way it will start in 1 kick at most times. If you buy it I will tell you THE CORRECT WAY to start it. Works perfect.
Oh, and your idea is like virgil's trike but makes more sense. Lower to the ground and all that jazz.
I had a 426 for a year before it got stolen. I'm another one to say that they suck to start. There is a method, but even that doesn't work when you stall it in the woods and the motor is hot.
The carb has a fuel accelerator on it, so when you start it you use the "hot start" button, DO NOT TOUCH THE THROTTLE AT ALL, set the piston at the top of the compression stroke using the compression release, then one swift kick should do it.
I loved that bike. Aswome power....very strong low end. It would pull a wheelie in any gear at any speed. Just don't stall it unless there is a hill near by to bump start it.
I think that motor in a 3 wheeler would be awsome!! good luck!
I had a '99 400f and loved the bike , the 400f is a great motor and you can probably pick it up cheaper than the 426.
Methanol, the nectar of the gods!
Go to Thumpertalk.com and do a search on....blue wire mod. This is suppose to help with the starting.
pretty crappy carbs too in the 2001'sOriginally Posted by My trike Sucks
