    just got a 96 Honda z50R, 4 or 2 stroke

I bought a nice 1996 Honda z50R (early CRF 50 basically or newer model mini-trail) anyway the dude i got it from was putting mixed gas in it and told me it was 2 stroke, first time I owned a dirtbike, but I think its a 4 stroke...

    is it?

could that mixed gas mess it up?

Lol. The Z50 is a four stroke...to let you know. Mixing the gas and oil will not screw the bike up mechanically but will produce more smoke and cause excess build up of carbon on the piston and on the valves. I am suspecting you mean mixed gas as in GAS and OIL correct? I would just run 91 octain and ride it. They are fun machines. I liked my friends CRF50 and I doubt this one is much different. Honda hasn't changed that motor for YEARS.

Yeah, 4 stroke. My buddy's little brother put premix in his long ago without realizing what it was, they rode it like that for a while and it was fine. He had me drain the tank back into his pre mix can because his pingers needed gas more than the 50. That bike will also run just fine on regular gas, save your coin unless you want to run premium. Oh and as a general rule, bikes that have no expansion chamber in the exhaust = four stroke.

Yeah oil+gas, I figured it was 4 stroke, whats an expansion chamber, I have never owned a 2 stroke? This bike is fun, I ride it and the 50cc pulls me around just fine.

Expansion Chamber is the exhaust pipe, The part of the exhaust that starts at the head gets wide and round. Has a Wide Chamber instead of an equal sized Exaust pipe like 4 strokes that run straight back to silencer. Hope that helps!

The "expansion chamber" is the "fat part" of the pipe that you see on 2-strokes of all sorts. It is basically how the engine is tuned to respond well in a certain RPM range. Four-strokes have a straight tube with no expansion because the valves and lack of "scavenging effect" don't allow for "RPM tuning" as much as a two-stroke does.

I have run just about everything on mixed gas. The Big Bear seemed to like it just fine, it made a nice streak of blue smoke when I held it wide open in 5th on fireroads...
