    Engine/Carb ? for a Polaris 90 Quad

I have a Polaris Scrambler 90 for my son. Its a 2001 model that has not seen more than 7 tanks of fuel thru it. The machine starts right up and idles fine. The problem is when attempting to ride. Sometimes you can hit the gas and go and other times you have to feather the throttle cause the machine bogs down. It will appear to run fine when it takes off OK, but when letting off the throttle to slow down or what not the machine seriously hesitates. I get some back fire puffs occasionaly from the exhaust pipe as well as having to work the throttle to get the engine to take off again. Its kinda hard to explain and if you need a better explanation just ask and I will try and do a better job.
I figured that it was a fuel supply or air inlet problem as th machine seemed to be starving. I removed and replaced the fuel filter that was only slightly dirty. Next I moved on to the airfilter. The air filter was saturated with oil. I removed the filter and started the machine to see if the filter was the problem causing air restriction. It still did the same thing, just slightly milder though. I noticed when the machine was running that a mist of fuel could be seen exiting the carbs intake at idle. I gassed it and to my amazement the mist actually increased instead of decreased. I assumed it would decrease as the air should be sucked into the carb. This would explain why the air filter was so saturated in oil as the carb is spitting fuel into the air cleaner assembly.
So who would like to take a guess at what my problem is? Its obviously in the carb. I blasted it with carb cleaner, but I have yet taken it apart to thouroghly clean. Does this sound like a float issue, or a jet? I am open t suggestions as I have not had this problem ever before.

First clean the carb, which means completely disassemble and remove jets, and make sure you can blow carb cleaner all the way through each orifice.
Floats are not the problem unless it pees gas out the carb overflow when its sitting still not running.
To have jetting so far off would be a real a challenge, and if it used to work with current settings, your jetting didnt suddenly change.
A common problem with these is the electric choke. The choke is normally on, and power from the running motor heats a little pill like heating element which causes the choke circuit to close. Make sure the connector is connected for the two wires that go to the carb, and there should be 12v present on them only when the bike is running. If there is no power, or its unplugged, you are choked all the time. If carb has been cleaned (which is probably the problem) and choke has power, you may have to pull the choke out of the carb, and apply 12v to it for a few minutes and see if the plunger begins to extend. If it does not, the little heating element inside the choke assembly may have failed.

Thank you for the response. Sorry that I posted in the wrong forum. After posting I realized that it was the incorrect place.

I was wondering if the electronic choke was the problem. I will take the carb off the machine and go through it. I thought the choke for the fact that it seems the machine is kinda flooding itself out when running and that would explain the hesitaion and back firing that I get on decelleration.

Is your Polaris a 2 stroke? If it is be sure to check the reeds when you haqve the carb off.

Thanks to all with input. It was the crappy reformulated fuel that we have here. The main and pilot jets were plugged, but not plugged. Their was this film like substance that was causing the problems. It all is a result of the reformulated gas. I cleaned and all is good now. Again Thanks!
