Project YTM 200, what engine upgrades?

OK, now that my YTM 200 is just about done it's time to think about modding it . What is there for it? Do XT200 or 225 parts swap over like the Honda x-xr interchange? I can get a Web cam for it but since I don't need a top end engine I was wondering if the XT cam would swap in for a performance boost without going all out (or spending $130). Also, these things come with a puny 22mm carb. How do I get a bigger one on there? I have a Kerker exhaust for it already and a Wiesco 10.25:1 compression .50 over piston. I also have a Moose air filter but I was thinking of switching to a K&N with outerwear and no air box.

raise the compression more..... run alcohol.. buy that cam. I also would like to know how big of a carb will fit on there, since I own one... mabee spray the piss out of it with nitrous.... that would make some power for awhile. where did you get the exhaust for it???

I got the exhaust off ebay a few months ago. I heard the DG that is still available but is more of a stock replacement then a performance pipe so I jumped at the chance when it came up. I still need to blast and paint it as the chrome is rusting on the header.

Port and polish the head maybe, or at least clean up the casting flaws, they are pretty rough stock. There is a cool exhaust for a 200 on ebay right now, a chrome one, not sure what brand it is.

Haven't heard anything on the cam swap before so I doubt it would work. The mods listed are a great start! The piston will make a big difference. Clean up the ports (I hear a rougher intake and polished exhaust port work best) and install a larger carb (DX/DR225, maybe a 250SX carb?) Just remember the big carb will rob low end like certain cams will. Sprocket changes can gain you more torque should you need it.

Personally I'd stick with the airbox if you plan to get it dirty at all. I hate riding without one but I'm working on a cheap solution to that while still being able to run a clamp on pod filter.

Good luck and keep us informed. Love the old YTMs more then any Big Red.

Does you carb to head boot have two bolts the carb has to bolt on to? or is it the clamp-type? I think earlier models were clamp type, so if you put one of those boots on there, you should have a better selection of carbs. Then you could put a 200x one or something.

The carb. mount I have is the 2 bolt style, I tried to mount up a spare 200x carb. but the bolt spacing is different. I do have a spair 1983 style clamp type mount so I think you are right and I will have to find a carb. to mount up to that one.

sweet I have the clamp type... so what size carb will make a difference, but not rob all the low end torque?
