Question 99 Polaris Scrambler 400, Smoking a lot, no power.

G'day Guys, I have run into a problem with my polaris Scrambler. It seems to be getting too much oil. I let it warm up and lots of blue smoke is coming out of it. I put a new spark plug in it, clean the carb, but there is a lot of blue smoke coming out of it, plus it has no power. It's doesn't rev up. It will drive around the yard for about 10 mins and has enough power to haul you around but that's it. And after 10 mins, it will idle fine but then doesn't have enough power to haul it's self around. Any idea would be great, thanks
    Adam.

How many hours are on the motor?. First thoughts are that if its a '99, and it hasn't been done, you need a top end rebuild. I'd just do one anyway cause it probably needs it regardless but you could take it a shop and have it compression tested.

does it idle well? usually a bad top-end wont idle. does it rev up in neutral?

how does it drive? barely move? if it only doesent rev in gear, and has no power while driving, it could be bad clutch buttons.

    start simple

try taking the baffle out and run it around the yard to blow the carbon out.
My wife has one just like your Adam ( been a real good workhorse for us ).

The motor was totally redone by the dealer about 2 years ago, it might have 30hrs on it. It starts and idles fine. It's not the clutch because I replaced that all too, I know what a bad clutch feels like. I still think it's got something to do with the oil injection system. Thanks for you ideas guys kept them coming.
    Thanks

Maybe you could get a oil injection blockoff kit or make one and mix the oil with the gas yourself. See if that works maybe?

Theres really no way for the injection system to pump out too much oil unless there isn't enough fuel to mix the normal injection with it. To be perfectly honest with you - I've actually never heard of the injection pump ever really going bad. Most people usually replace it or block it off because of the "what if" factor. If you're so sure its not a top end issue, I would next go to the carb. You're obviously running too rich - but from what?. Tear it apart and give it a good cleaning. Hopefully thats all it is. If not - Its colder up there than in the summer so if anything, you needed to go higher on the mainjet. Did you?. If you did, maybe too much and back it off - but - if you didn't, and you had any type of airleak anywhere past the carb, you might have run too lean this winter and scorched the piston or rings enough to cause trouble. Anythings possible. If the carb cleaning dosent work - Do a compression test or take it for one. You could also just drain it, take the head off and take a look. It should be obvious. Another thing, just for giggles - the electrical plugs on the left side handlebar control pod are succeptable to becoming loose or getting dirt in there, causing ignition problems. Check that.

definatly check out the ETC incase the rev limiter is coming on.

also I would recomend a compression test the stock polaris pistons don;t last too well.

wicked could the oil injection be way out of adjustment like the return spring broke or something?

I would remove the oil injection cover to take a look see. and definatly do a compression test gauges are only like 20.00 and can identify alot of problems before they arise.
