    250x vs. 300ex

I was searching around and i got my eye on a 87 250x. it's in pretty sore shape, but i hear that almost everything 300ex is direct bolt on. How true is this, i have located a 300ex motor, shells and othe misc parts, should i be safe in assuming this would be a sweet project, or, like it seems, is it too good to be true?

The 300EX is essentially the exact same quad as the 250X, just with a larger displacement engine and an electric starter. Everything from the 300EX will bolt onto the 250X and vice versa.

Very true it all bolts on to each other. If you even look at the engines there isnt any size difference. But i must warn you those things are pretty quick but once you put a turbo on them ther insane. They make then like 50HP

if you swap motors you'll need to swap wire harnesses and fab something up for a battery mount. The only difference displacement wise is about 35cc due to a longer stroke. The rest is all the same.

I had 300EX fenders on my 250X. I also bought 300EX a-arms, tie rods, hubs, spindles, rotors etc but someone stole it before I put them on! I went with a 250X over a 300EX cause I wanted the kicker.

well hell yea! My dad has a 250ex(the one in my sig) besides the larger displacement, manual clutch and other various differences, is the 300ex in fact that much better of a machine, I do alot of forest riding and the 250ex is very nice, but i want something with a little more kick!

We are talking about a 250X not a 250EX. A 250X is chain drive, manual clutch. 1991 or 1992 was the last year.

Sorry i got off subject and didnt explain much. I was wondering, as far as getting a new machine because i havent decided on the 250x as of just yet. I was looking at some newer quads as well as the 250x. as far as newer quads go i was looking at either a 2002 250ex or a 2000 300ex, how much differences have people noticed between these machines?

although i would much rather buy the 250x and rebuild it, something makes me want something that i can ride right away!

I would most definelty go with a 250X/300EX over a 250EX. The 250EX has the sideways motor, auto clutch, shaft drive. Where the 250X/300EX are chain and hand clutch. But over all of those I'd recomend getting a 400EX, great bike.

I agree. With all the 450's out now you'll find some pretty nice deals too.

My friend used to have a 250ex. Like said before, sideways motor, auto clutch, and shaft drive. It was slow. They consider it a sports quad but I dont see why. Sure the relaibility may be good, but its slow. I used to beable to beat one on my xr100r. If i were you i would go for the 300ex or 250x. Nice bikes, great for trails, enough motor to get you anywhere. I have one sitting in my yard. But this one has severe motor problems and its a 2001. Still good enough for the trails, will climb any hill you want.

I can't believe I'm gonna recommend a non-Honda but if you must have reverse you could look into a Z/KFX400. They are getting pretty cheap as well.

Gonna have to put up the BS flag on that one No turbo or nitrus is going to almost triple horsepower. The 250X was rated at just under 16 HP from the factory, the 300EX 17. The differences between the two are minimal but If you were to race them side by side, it usually comes down to rider skill and traction as to who wins the race. Mechanically, the one big advantage the 250X had over the 300EX is the 36mm carb vs the 32mm. The weight difference is minimal.
