hey i got a 86 honda bigred 250 and i was just woundering were the one way bearing was at. i need to replace because my bike will not cetch kicking over and slips out of gear going down hills. any info will be helpfull. Thanks.

I don't think the one way bearing has much to do with any of those problems.
I would be thinking along the lines of being reasembled wrong and or damaged shift forks/kicker gears.
What is the history of your bigred ,,, ?

#2 Have you tried pull starting this machine ( with another machine )? If you have did the motor turn over? Or did the wheels turn but the motor wouldn't turn over?
#3 When you try to kick start it does it try to catch and then release? Or does it slip all the time?
#4 You say it kicks out of gear. Does it actually kick out of gear or does it want to roll faster down hill, and then seem to be back in gear when you give it gas ( without touching the shifter )?
#5 Have you done any work on the motor lately?
The answer to these questions should either confirm the one-way clutch going / or being bad. Or it will point to another problem ( s ).

I put all my money on it being a bad one way sprag clutch!
Mine is the same and has all the symptoms that Howdy described.
I beleive the sprag unit is embedded into the centrifugal clutch. It prevents it from spinning backwards.
What could be a bad outcome if one does not get around to fixing this sprag clutch Howdy?

If you fail to fix a bad one-way clutch or sprag ( same part ) you risk the possibility of trashing your electric starter and the 1st reduction gear that mates up with it. You might ask: How can this happen?: The one-way clutch is a mutli used item. 1st off it works sto engage the kickstarter, thus getting the motor to turn over ( for starting and such ). 2nd, it also works to ekep the engage the motor when coasting down hill ( using the motor as a brake for slowing the machine down ). 3rd aand I consider the most important thing is that the one-way clutch works to keep the motorf rom turning backwards when you turn it off. What happens here is if the motor is happens to be on the wrong stroke when shut off it could turn backwards too far and engage the starter gears on the left side. If the motor turns backwards too far It will destroy the electric starter gear and the splines on the starter. I have seen 5-10 machines with this problem. Can you wait and fix it later? Well look at it this way: A one-way sprag / Clutch will cost aprox $60-$85 plus a gasket ( $10-$15 ). I estimate $70 to $100. If you do it yourself. It sure beats spending $200 or more to replace the extra parts you trashed while saving money now.
Ultimately the choice is yours to do it how ever you want. For me I know what way I will go in the future if I have this problem. The money I save from not having to replace a starter and gear will be used for refreshments.

I do know they are exspensive for bearings ,,, but cheaper then all the componets they can take out in the long run.
I am a hoping big_redboy comes back with a reply. I still think his trike has tinkering history.

hey guys well my problems are, when i kick the bike over it doesn't catch. also when im going down hills it sllips out of gear, like its in neutral but when i give it some gas it comes back into gear. and when i go to jump start it and put it in gear it just turns the tires and doesn't turn the motor over. thanks guys for the help.

so it is my one way bearing that is gone? and is it hard to take the clutch apart?
No it ain't too hard to replace the bearing. The nut holding the clutch on is left hand thread.
If you don't have a manual ,,, pm me your mailing address up there in Canada and I'll copy out of my manual tomorrow and send you the copys.

Hmmm.... looks like i'm gonna have to get into this job fairly soon myself... doh.
I plan to install a new clutch while i'm at it.. anyone recomend " Barnett " brand ?

ok took it all apart yesturday and i found out that it is the oneway bearing that is gone. thanks for all the help. very easy job.
