THE MILITARY (Army) BANS RIDING 3 WHEELERS!!!

THE MILITARY (Army) BANS RIDING 3 WHEELERS!!!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At Ft. Campbell in KY/TN after a kid was being towed in a sled (last month when it snowed) behind a 3 wheeler and his sibling ran into him on a go cart and killed him in the housing area (or so I was told thats how it happened), Ft. Campbell has banned 3 wheelers (of all types even the motorcycle type I think) and all go carts. I will find out for sure the full details and let you know, it was just in an email my commander sent out today.

You can hunt near the outdoor club and all the hunters take 4 wheelers into the mass acreage back there, and I havent checked yet but last time I was here you could ride your ATV/dirtbike back there with proper paperwork and they had an MX track. I was waiting for good weather and to finish up the projects then gear up and go for the first time until this crap happens. Its the militarys usual way of "fixing" things by just halting it all together and reprieving Army commanders from taking the rap for it. One always ruins it for everyone else.

Needless to say I was less than happy about this. At my last station (an AF base in TX) you could ride anything all day long and they even maintained the area. Im inclined to write the installation commander and attempt to change his mind about it.

It's unfortunate that the Base Commander would feel it necessary to ban three wheelers, ATVs, or offroad vehicles all together, but I suppose it is his call to make.

Officers (especially those in command) carry a great deal of responsibility and liability for things that occur on their base, ship or station.

Think about it....not only does he have to worry about the welfare of his subordinates and their families, but a blemish in his service record (which the untimely death of a young kid can surely cause) will decrease his chances for selection to the next higher paygrade.

I'm sure that whatever Flag Officer he answers to is demanding to know what he is doing to prevent any future occurances of ATV accidents on his post, and a total ban may be the best answer for now.

Surely, with time, a group of soldiers who support off road vehicle riding can propose a plan for proper training, atv safety courses, and registration for on base off-road vehicles. Right now he is doing the right thing for the soldiers and the public.

Well, my wife can get on a 3 wheeler and ride it just fine. Lets see you get on a quad or dirt bike and take off fast and make a hard right turn, will you flip? Most likely YES. 3 wheelers are only dangerous when stupid people ride them! If they were still made would I get one for my kids? YES!! Why? Well any idiot can ride a 4wheeler and by learning on a 3 wheeler they would be that much better of a rider. Calling a patriot that is serving this great country an idiot displays a true lack of respect. I would love to see you get banned "quickonstep, AKA, slowonthinking"

Point taken but singling out 3 wheelers is the prob here, what about everyone else that has them in the garage? And the trike motorcycle hog rider types. And there are only certain areas you are supposed to ride ATVs anyway, they were in an unauthorized area as you cant ride in the housing area, so ultimately it was the fault of the parent there. Most likely they didnt even have helmets, the ban is not the answer, its ignorance. Strict rules are the answer and consequences for those that dont abide is the fix.

You guys are starting to sound like the opposing 3 wheeler lawyers. First they ban them, then they do it at one post, then another, then they ban them for even riding them off duty-and ultimately owning them. Who on post will want one in the garage now and put up with the stigma etc? AND THEY COULD ban them like that Ive seen it with other stuff.

I agree full well that three wheelers should not be singled out in this situation, but, as we know, the military has been known to punish the masses to correct the few. While inefficient and perhaps unfair, it is definitely a common theme in all branches of the service.

Since I have never had the pleasure of being stationed anywhere that permitted ATV use on base, I can't attest to how it should be regulated. I would assume that any kind of off road vehicles would be prohibited in base housing, just as they are in any neighborhood.

I would wait until the official message comes out on message traffic and see if registered off road vehicles are indeed banned in the areas traditionally reserved for ORV use. I'm sure you know as well as I do that Unit commanders are capable of exaggeration and/or misinterpretation of Base CO policies. If a message does come across on message traffic, shoot it to me in an email if you don't mind, I'd like to have a look at it.

I really do think that a little time, and an all hands effort to prove responsible ORV ownership and use will persuade the base Commander to permit them once again.

Ummm.... If you look at the link, it wasn't from the military it was from a local news station about what happened. NOT what action the military is taking.

As far as personal insults about "s" ... take a look at yourself first. I agree with MarkDB420.... Quickonstep... where you steping your foot to?? your mouth? Quickstepfootinmouth?.? kettle? pot? black?

I can see this thread being quickly eliminated by the mods and rightfully so. You ever see the movie Bambi? "If you can't say nothing nice... don't say nothing at all"

Thanks for the info jmsmilin. This is what we need to be mindful of when we ride etc. Just like an earlier post today about riding double on a R by a definite newbie... use common sense or worse things will be coming down the line! It's bad enough I can't find insurance coverage anymore for my 3wheeler. In NYS it's a law now to have registration and insurance on your ATV's to ride anywhere but your own property. Mishaps like this will bring the scope in on all ATV's. (no pun intended on the scope!)

I would like to show sympathy for you, and now that i've tried PM'ing you a million times, i'll just high jack your thread. DUDE YOU OWE ME MONEY!! BE A MAN AND AT LEAST RESPOND TO MY MESSAGES! quit hiding like a little baby...PLEASE!

oh and by the way, yeah three wheelers are unsafe, yeah cars are unsafe, yeah WALKING DOWN THE STREET is unsafe, everything today is unsafe, that doesn't stop us from doing them! But anything on 3 wheels by nature will not be as sturdy....i'd rather have a 4 legged table then a 3 legged table...woudln't you? i didn't even bother to read the article, but I do agree with the people that think 3wheelers arne't the safest thing their is, and riding on a government military base would be a HUGE liability for anyone associated with it, even the rider.
