I've mentioned this before and many people doubt the truth of it but, one of the big magazines (3&4 Wheel Action I *think* but it might have been a different one, I know it wasn't dirtwheels) used to test top speed in their bike reviews. In their letters section someone questioned their numbers and methods and they responded that tests were on pavement (no wheel spin) and radar guns were used and occasionally they would actually take the bikes to a local drag strip.

That said, these were the top speeds I can remember. Bikes were all 100% stock but tuned for best performance (jetting and what not).

    1987 Tecate : 94mph
    1986 250R : 92mph
    1988 Banshee : 88mph
    1986 350x : 72mph (could have been an '85 I suppose, don't recall)

I remember those speeds very specifically. I remember seeing a couple of different top speeds for the 200x in a couple of different places. They ranged from 58 to 62mph but it wasn't the same magazine and I don't know how they got those numbers or even if the bikes were stock.

I KNOW a 1986 250R can do WAY over 65. I used to ride along side a highway that had a 55mph speed limit (meaning traffic was on average 10mph higher than that) and I used to pass those cars easily. Real easily. If my R topped out at under 80-85mph I'd be really surprised.

I saw a radar gun online recently for $99. Anyone feel like buying one and putting this subject to rest? I was tempted but I need paddle tires.

Those top speeds are way too high

    1987 Tecate : 94mph
    1986 250R : 92mph
    1988 Banshee : 88mph
    1986 350x : 72mph
87 Tecate is like 74 ish

Dunno bout the rest, 200x 60?
    82 R 65?

It's not me claiming those numbers. I have no way to know what any of their top speeds are (and my R isn't stock so I can't even really go by that even if I knew what it's was either). I swear to god there's a mag from back in the day that stated those top speeds. I think it was the same one that tricked out a '88 Banshee to the point that it did a 101mph 1/4 mile (11 seconds I think) but I might be mistaken. I had so many different mags back then it's hard to remember which articles were in which mags. It was somewhat controversial at the time. Several people wrote into their letters section questioning the validity of their numbers but they always stood by them. Maybe I'm nuts but I can see it in my head like it was yesterday.

The curiousity is gonna get the best of me eventually and force me to spend the hundred bucks on that radar gun.

LOL I say get the gun. I remember a article of dirt wheels where they took a long rod 370 Banshee to the salt flats, tried different gearing and race cut fenders, got the thing to do 118mph.

speeds for 86 hi- performance 3 wheelers

    HeY Guys
I saw this post and thought I d look up some of the top speeds for the 86 2-stroke racing 3 wheelers in the 86 may issue of 3 wheeling and here are the numbers( 3 wheeling radar gun).
    86 atc 250r = 69 mph
    86 tecate 3 = 65 mph
    86 tri-z = 67 mph
These top speeds were done on a windy day but they probably average the speed test runs out(with the wind and against the wind) .
These are the offical top speed numbers that 3 wheeling magazine published for thier may 86 hi- performance shootout of the 86 atc250r vs 86 tri-z vs 86 tecate 3. The article also states what type of power bands each bike has, handling, suspension etc etc. Also, the 86 atc250r was the fastest from 0-60 mph acceleration test followed by a close second place of the tecate 3 and then further back in third is the tri-z. These machine were completely stock. I also read in 3&4 wheel action magazine( I believe it's the april 86 issue?) that the 86 tecate 3 had a top speed of 67 mph in that test.
Anyone who knows of other magazines that published the top speeds could you post them as well.
    Take it easy.

We'll never settle this without our own radar gun and a lot of testing.

we have a vacant golf course that has been empty for years and there is a long straight away that you can easily get top speed and high gear on.
