I found a great deal on a 88 kdx200, and ive been looking at mods. but everyting i find is for 89+, will the parts still work? It already has a dg pipe.

The 88 kdx's were the last year for the aircooled motors. 89 through 94 was the next wave, and had watercooling. In 95 they went to the perimeter frame, and in 97 added the kdx220. While the watercooled models are better, your bike is better than the mid 80's models because it has both the powervalve setup and the 35mm carb. As far as mods go, you can still do the normal things. The most restrictive thing on any kdx is the stock pipe. I'd put a pipe on it, you can get a fmf for it at dennis kirk if you want to try it instead of the dg

and get some boyesen power reeds for the stock cage, doing that and cutting some holes in the airbox woke mine up alot. Another cheap mod you could do is gear the sprockets either higher or lower depending on what you want. This site will help you with setup info

They didn't E-dog. The 88 kx bikes were all liquid cooled, as they were since the early 80's. However, the kdx didn't receive liquid cooling till 89. Alot of manufacturers didn't liquid cool their enduro bikes until far later than the mx bikes were, much the same pattern one can see relating to three wheelers, at least in honda's case. The 83 and 84 mx honda bikes were liquid cooled, but not the atc until 85 etc. The mx bikes always get top priority on receiving the newest technology and then everything has to sort of trickle down to the other models.

ive owned alot of good quality bikesover the last 15 yrs,the 89 kdx 200 i bought new.added a few mods, pipe, roostboost, kips valve spacer,etc.... was the best i ever had.not the fastest or fanciest, but dollar for dollar it was an excellant machine.i had it for 5 years, run it hard too, never put a clutch in it,rebuilt it once, probably didnt even need it.i would buy another one if i found one in good shape....what would you pay nowadays for a good 89-91 kdx??
I seen somebody selling a 1988 kdx 125 for $2500 restored.

A good '89-91 kdx should go between $900-$1300 depending on condition. Once you get to $1500, you're looking at the new generation bikes ('96-'05). I have a 2000 kdx 200 with a gnarly pipe and power core silencer among other goodies and it's the best all around dirt bike I've owned. (this is my second one)
i just found a 89 for 700$.its at a friend of mines house now.its a guy who races who uses it to putt around the woods on.its well maintained and very clean.i told him if he still has it after i get my taxes bak ,i'll get it from him.its one of those things where if i can get it at $700[he said $1000 for anyone else] great,if he sells it, its no loss really,i have enough projects to keep me busy! its stock execpt a procircut pipe/silencer
I finaly got my car running so i could get my three wheeler out and start it up.My 1988 kdx is in pieces on my work bench. My car ended up having problems in the middle of the project.Hope to have it done buy fall.

ScottZJ, I like that bike. I always loved the KDXs. I've been seriously considering picking up a nice late model KDX.
Honda200es, is your 88 KDX the white and blue model or the green and blue model? There was the same color scheme choices for the 88 KXF Tecate-4
Also in 84, you could get your KDX 200 in red and black or green and black, just like the Tecate. In the old Dirt Rider magazine article I have, they say Kawasaki was offering a color choice to the recreational off road crowd to see if they were losing sales due to the Kawasaki Green color.
Just useless KDX Trivia.

Yes you are correct. The Red color was super rare too. It had red tank and sort of looked like a honda from a distance.
