It says in the manual to adjust the chain free play to 3/8 to 3/4 inch....Am I right in assuming that this measurement is to be taken by pushing the chain as far up and down as it will go using all necessary force to move it or should the chain flop freely without applying pressure to the chain????

I have always done it like you said,,,apply pressure on the chain up and down..make sure you adjudt,,then spin the chain around a couple times to get the slack out and then rechack your adjustment..
You must be fast,because I was hauling ass when I past you!
