Smoke blowing out carb????

Ok. I just got finished fixing the starter only to run into a new problem. When you turn the engine over it sputers and shoots little puffs of white smoke out of the back of the carb. Also when you run it, then check the plug the tip is covered in sut (I'm thinking sut cause you can wipe most of it off). While starting and it puffing smoke out the back, if you pull the plug it doesn't seem flooded or any thing because the plug doesn't smell like gas. It's a bit of a pain to get to start in the first place, but if you pull it behind my YTM225 then it'll start fine. What's up???? As always thanks fo the help guys

Check the compression and adjust the valves. the symptom of not starting with the starter, but starting fine when pulled is indicitive of a weak or tweaked motor.

is there a write up on adjusting the valves??? I still don't understand smoke blowing out the carb

i have seen smoke coming out of the carb only to the fact that a friend of mine thinks that if he cant pull start it he needs starting fluid. He has shot out lil puffs of smoke and some flames out of the carb but in Your case im confused.

If you have smoke coming out of the carb, I would say your timing is off by just a little bit. This may not be as noticed when you are towing it to start becuase the engine is turning over faster. This could also cause the problem with ignition which is seen on the plug. Checking the valve gap could also help. If the gap is too small, the valves could be staying open longer than they should.

... its either from an open intake valve or you have a hicup timing backfire.
