    found some rare nos tires

I recently bought a pair of dick cepek three wheeler tires. 22x12.50-8, look similar to a wooly booger. they are new never mounted but they are probably about 40 years old. no dry rot or cracking. I'm going to mount one on a split Honda rim with a tube and see how it does.

Have you tried mounting them without tubes?

If you put those on with tubes, that's probably where they're going to stay. Since the split rims basically stretch the bead into place when aired up, any rust that happens afterwards just about glues the tires to the wheel halves.

For people who haven't used the two piece wheels, breaking the bead down can actually be more difficult than a one piece wheel. The softer the sidewall on a tire, the more difficult it is when the there's rust inside the wheel, and there is not pop with the bead going on or off. The taper on a two piece wheel is like a wedge and it can be a fight all the way down to get the bead loose.

the tire is 40 years old. I have yet to successfuly mount a split Honda rim without a tube so a tube guarantees it holds air

I'm not denying you've had issues, but I've not had a single issue with the split rims.

I've never tried goobering one up with silicone or the like and I won't use rusty split rims. If the O-rings are even a bit suspect, I replace them. Mostly, I stretch them out a little and look for cracks, weathering. I just took a look at another split rim candidate yesterday and concluded there was too much rust to reuse the wheel, even after blasting and painting. The overwhelming majority of bad split rims I've seen were ones that had tubes installed. Not that they got tubes because they were bad, but because a tube was put in a good wheel and it rusted them out. Most likely, because someone wanted to use a bad tire.

I don't mean light rust either, but on the verge of having holes in the wheel, of which I've seen several. I had a batch of OEM wheels powder coated a few years ago, and some of those were the two-piece, which I haven't used yet. I used to blast and paint wheels myself, but because it's so labor intense, I'll just farm them out now, as it cost less in the end and frees me up to work on other things.

I save all the wheels I can, but I've thrown a lot away. If they're in such bad condition they require tubes, I'm not using them. I do understand the special use of vintage tires though, for collectible trikes and wanting to stay with questionable vintage tires. That's a different situation than a rider.
