    New toy

Picked up an 85 tri zinger for my son for Christmas! Thing runs decent but has a Chinese carb. Guy says he has the original and will send it to me. Only thing concerns me is it’s making a weird buzzing noise while running. It’s hard to find the sound when I have to hide it for 2 months.

That’s awesome this is the first one I’ve ever had. I had an atc 70 when I was a kid. This one was originally blue like yours!

Is it that rusty 9" third member?

Besides something loose and rattling, I'd check the recoil.

Haha no it’s an 8” there’s a few rusty 9” ones to the right of that one out of the picture. I had the pull start off the other day I didn’t notice anything unusual. I need to send the kids to grandmas so I can mess with it.

I'd start with checking the plastics for loose fasteners or very near contact with metal parts.

That shouldn't take more than applying pressure in areas to see if the noise stops.

I've certainly heard plastic vibrate like that, making a buzzing sound.

From there I'd inspect any lightweight metal parts. The heavier the part, the more likely it'll make a lower frequency sound, more of a rattle than a buzz.

Anything that's safe to put a hand on while running is what I'd do before getting any tools out. With the design of the forks, maybe put an ear near those. It could be spring making that noise.

I put my hands all over the plastics i don’t think it’s that. I pushed on the exhaust it didn’t stop the noise. I’ll try and make a video of it. I’ll have to make my boy stay in the house while I do it.

Stand in a puddle, grab the spark plug boot wiggle it around while running. Well ok no puddle. A leaking spark could buzz/tick or plug loose perhaps? Worst case its your oil pump gear (plastic) wearing out. Air box clean? The choke lever up by the bars will vibrate if loose. Um......
How old is your son? our son was 4 when he got his- there a bit tippy at speed- wheel spacers will help with that- untill he learns the body english part-
    shep

oh, i have a nos zinger carb if u need any pics of what the internals "should" look like- (spare for our zinger) i have no issues opening it to show any detail-

I tried the puddle trick even during a lightning storm had no such luck haha. I put a new plug so it’s not that the oil injection is blocked off and the air box is off another thing the seller is going to send me. The choke cable is loose but the sound is around the engine. He turns 4 on the 28th this month. I think he will be ok with the turns he rides on the front with me and leans with me and has it down pretty good. I do needs some pics of the jets these are not marked I have some mikuni jets so I can try and get this one running a little better. It bogs mid-top end. I’m going to get a video of it running here in a few.

    New toy

Gonna agree with shortline i think I'd say Run her till she blows or (I hate most chinese products) BUT our zinger has had a china topend for guessing over ten yrs now no issues- kit came with cylinder/head/ piston, ring and pin + gaskets for under $100. There all over ebay just dont get the cheapest...You could do the swap in 2-hrs if exhaust studs break it doesnt matter you'll have a new part on assembly-
Its your call- but that extra rattle noise is concerning

I'll get jet pics tomorrow for ya

    shep

Edit- just went trough a box and found the stock top end (part of it) the wrist pin and bearing definitely have alot of play if i remember correctly the only reason the topend was changed was because i snapped exhaust bolts off changing out the exhaust. But the way this feels it was on the way out anyway.

ya probably way too much info i have a bad habbit of just rambling on and on.

oh ya china plugs are junk/ thats why the one that came with kit is still there

yes i have a bad habit of saving everything.....🥸

I was in denial the whole time hoping it wasn’t in the top end but I could tell when I made the video. Oh well I should be able to sneak one of those cheap top ends on it before Christmas. If it was any other bike it would get a real top end but it’s just a little kids bike.
