Just joined the site today - looking forward to some interactions with the folks on here. I have a "pair" of projects that are somewhat in-process and there's a story with each, hope to have both running well "before too long" - it's all a matter of how much free time I have.
I'm originally from Southwestern PA, about an hours outside of Pittsburgh - where I grew up the coal mines were active (this is early to late '80's) and we had access to a lot of terrain in which to enjoy on our bikes/ATV's (woods riding, coal piles, boney dumps, hill climbs, etc). I was a teen and had an '84 KXT250, it was a hoot and what was cool is it could be ridden year-round.
Fast forward 25 years, I live in Southern NH, and got back into dirt bikes, started racing hare scrambles (and the occasional Enduros) with the NETRA series (local to New England) won a couple championships (both on modern bikes and vintage bikes) and managed to win the B Super Senior championship for '23 and got promoted to A class (expert) this year. if anyone is interested, I post all my helmet cam from the 1st lap, just search "sjsst41 NETRA" on YouTube and you can see some of the action.
Along the way (maybe 5 years ago) I was having lunch with a colleague at work, and we got to chatting about 3 wheelers, he mentioned BITD riding an '86 ATC 250R, and I chatted about adventures on the Tecate. I asked him what did he every do with the ATC and he said after his 1st child was born, his wife made him park it, and it was still parked at home & hadn't moved for ~20 years. I asked if he'd be interested in selling it - he's like yeah - and it ended up at my house by the next weekend.
And yesterday I picked up an '85 KXT250 that will need some attention - I did take it for a spin around the sellers property (runs well, but has some mechanical issues that will be addressed) and it was like I instantly went back in time 35 years.
So basically I have two projects, and little time, with a goal to get them both running well and looking respectable. The plan will be to take them back to PA (I still have family in the area I grew up in) and hit some of what's left of the local trails. Again at my age it's about drinking in the memories/nostalgia and maybe have a few new adventures along the way.
