1985 atc 250r rear shock options

I just found an 1985 ATC250R rear shock is blown. What are my options? I’ve been searching for an hour. I want the best I can get... called Elka and got a big fat no. Thanks for suggestions in advance.

Shmitty on ebay, race tech which about any shop can do. KB5industries, or jogaca suspension works. Elka is for Elka and 90% of us don't need that for riding.

If you were dead set on going high end, e.g., Elka or Custom Axis, I'm pretty sure the rear shock of the 85/86 250R is the same as the TRX 250R, which they do make shocks for. The only difference would be the length of the hose to the remote reservoir.

If you want to go cheaper, the stock shock can be made very good. Just replace the shock head seal, shock oil, and bumper. Race Tech also sell a Gold Valve that allows you to customize your valving. I rebuild my own shocks. You might want to try it--it's not that hard.

Turns out it has a works on it now or some other aftermarket shock. I’m an Elka dealer so the price would be fair. Can any one else confirm the trx shock is the same?

Speaking for OEM shocks....just as stated above.....
The only difference between an 85-86 ATC250R and an 86-87 TRX250R rear shock is the length of the remote reservoir hose and the remote reservoirs themselves are different.

On the ATC reservoir, the hose comes into the reservoir inline with the compression dampening knob. On the TRX, the hose is at a right angle to the compression dampening knob. Eye to eye length is the same and the internal parts are close to identical as well. I rebuilt my 86 ATC shock using 86-87 TRX seals, reservoir bladder, and internals.

First pic is the OEM TRX rezzy, second pic will be the ATC. Those are the only difference I've found

If that doesn’t work out and you can confirm it’s a Works I’ll bet they can rebuild it.

Wait!.....I forgot something else!

You said 85 ATC?

Along with what I said above.....

Because I'm pretty sure the 85 ATC shock lower bolt hole where it connects to the linkage is smaller than 86 ATC and 86-87 TRX and they also used linkage with the bigger hole than the 85 linkage.

It's also an issue that you can't easily fix by drilling out the 85 Linkage for the bigger TRX bolt. Those are hardened steel bushes in there which will most certainly defeat most drill bits

So you would need to use the 86 ATC or TRX linkage on your 85 swingarm if you go with an aftermarket TRX shock

You may even already have the later linkage on that bike already as far as you know

Man you guys know your . My buddy works at factory connection so hopefully he can fix me up. I’ll let you know how it works out. I removed it today looks to be in good shape to. I think it’s a works shock. Can’t wait to rip this thing its a death trap with the pogo on it.

Got my rear shock back from Schmitty and so far it seams awesome but now I’ve noticed the front is a mess.
I weigh 225 lbs and ride very aggressive on rough trails. What’s a good front set up for me.

Progressive fork springs are a good option. Just like their name suggests they have a progressive spring rate, i.e., they get stiffer as they compress. Race Tech also sells fork springs and what they call a "cartridge emulator." The emulator allows you to adjust the compression resistance. It a valve that sits on top of the damping rod (and at the base of the fork spring) and you can adjust it with different springs provided in the kit. It's about $150 for the kit.
