Yamaha YTM225DX No Spark ... IM PULLING MY HAIR OUT!

So i picked up a non running 225DX. No Spark. No battery but hooked it up to a car battery and all functions seemed to work, still no spark. I ended up unplugging everything except the essentials. Stator plug and the other accompanying 3 loose wires into the harness, CDI into the harness and coil into the harness and ground from harness onto coil mounting bolt. BOOM ...and we have lift off!. Carb isnt dialed in so i spray some either in the cylinder, after 3 pulls she fires and runs for maybe 5 seconds then dies of course. Now....BACK TO NO SPARK! Ive tested with multi-meter the stator and coil and both are in spec. And ive actually tried other known good parts (harness, cdi and coil and 2 new plugs) swapping things in and out like plug and play. No combination gives me spark. When i did have spark before firing it up i plugged in the key switch and on/off light switch just to test them. Had spark with those plugged in so i know those are good. At this point no matter if everything is plugged in or just the basics and any combination in between i cant get spark.....im pulling my hair out! Any ideas????

Only thing i could think of was maybe the timing chain jumped so the timing is out of wack. It didnt sound like that happened though. How can i check that without a timing light thing?

I've had exciter coils(stator) that would produce spark on and off they test good but they are right on the edge. What is the condition of the wiring are most wires flexible and in good shape? no bad spots in the harness anywhere?

I've had a brand new NGK plug not spark. Took me two hours to figure it out

I've also seen the plug boot come loose from the coil wire or corrode inside and I trimmed off about a 1/2 of coil wire and screwed the plug boot back on and had success.

It sounds like an intermittent ground problem too but you already checked that

I doubt timing jumps would cause no spark. You'd still have a spark, just at the wrong time

I think fabio had fits with his DX back in the day. There may be some insight there. Seems like once the wiring gremlins show up on those rigs its all down hill. Wish i could help more buddy. I agree with the possibility of a bad plug. Nothing worse than spending half the day on a snowblower only to find out the new plug is junk. $4 elimination. Worth a shot.

Good advice all but ive done it already. Tried 3 different plugs, tested the primary and secondary winding in the ignition coil, all good and cut the wire back just to make sure i had fresh good connection. Wiring all seems to be good and i have an extra harness that i tied with no luck. I'll mess with it again when i have time and report back. thanks

well one thing you could do is check for continuity in all the wires. if your meter has the audible continuity setting the task isn't quite as tiresome

if you have the climber manual for it it will show how to check the timing without a light.when mine jumped timing it would fireat all and had almost no spark, i ended up changing the chain and top gear and all was good. somewhere on this site is a link to a download of the climber manual for these bikes. and i think i have a threadon my timing issue here too. ill see if i can find it.

I have worked on these since they were new; and every once in a while, this happens. Are you using the electric starter to check for spark; or are you using the pull starter?

I have seen a big difference in some Yamaha's, checking for spark both ways. Look at the spark closely, blue or yellow spark.

Do that test and either post here or PM me. I will jog my memory, in the meantime. I'll try to check this post regularly.
