By the way I did call Rocky mtn about the tusk axles and the gal I spoke with was going to ask but It did not sound very promising so I decided to pop on the niche axle.
You’ll need a sprocket spacer. Someone on the store makes em. You can use hardware store spacers like I did for a while but the billet one on. The store is more legit and looks nicer. But other than that the 300ex axle and hub work fine. You’ll also need new hubs. 400ex hubs work great.

Thanks Shawn. I already have one of the spacers. They look very nice. I would prefer to run a new carrier but my machine is an 85. So the 85/86 must be different since it's difficult to find any 85 new carriers. I guess for now I will just run my old 85 carrier. Already ordered the 400ex hubs as well.
I will post pics when it's finished.

From what I understand you can use the 86 style carrier bearing but you have to use the 86 style bolts for the sprocket hub, this isn’t going to be an issue for you since you will be using flush mount Alan heads with your new updated 300 ex style sprocket. I upgraded my whole swinger to the 86 style so if anyone reading this has another opinion please chime in. I think your safe to order an aftermarket carrier.

    300ex axle swap with adaptor

This has taken much longer than anticipated. I decided to pretty much redo the entire trike. Many new upgrades including a new take out motor, frame gusset and powder coat, inverted forks and much more. I will post up the build in Trikesylvania when it is finished.

First off the axle I went with is a niche brand. Do NOT buy one. I cheeped out and paid $112 shipped. It is an adjustable extended. The sprocket hub splines are way different than the stock. I had to end up buying the Durablue brand with different spline count. I argued with the company the splines were not stock. They argued back, still holding solid on the splines being oem. I just hope the axle holds up. Worst case scenario is I buy a used oem.

I am running stock 400ex hubs although I purchased the tusk extended hubs. They are pretty sweet but I am thinking I went overboard on the width. Good for open sand but too wide for trail riding.

The carrier is a new 300ex. I didn’t take any pics of the sprocket adaptor before I installed it but hopefully you can see it in the pics. I purchased that off Louise Mielke here on 3ww. Its a very nice piece. Running a 39 tooth rear sprocket. That may change but I will start there.

The rear swing arm is my stock 85 arm extended 2”. That should be very helpful from what I have heard. In the picture I have my oem stock rear shock mounted. I dropped off another oem to be rebuilt at my buddy Drew’s shop, Maultech ATV. It is ready but I have not had a chance to pick it up yet.

I am itching to get it completed and take it on a good ride. I will report back on how the rear axle set up actually works.

Sorry to hear about the Niche axle. I saw those on eBay and wondered what the quality would be like. Others use their carriers and give good reviews so maybe outside the spline issue, the axle holds up fine (fingers crossed!)

Looking nice and digging that 2" extended swing arm!

I'm currently helping my son revive an 85 350x from the frame up. Just starting to figure out what we are going to do in the axle department. Is the 300ex axle/carrier combo compatible with an 85 350x swingarm? I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on the Niche extendable 300ex axle with twin row bearing carrier for $200 and running the sprocket spacer if Louis is still offering them. Also with the brake rotors hub, we need one and I can't remember if a 250r rotor hub spline will fit. Planning to also do the Durablue posi lock axle nut setup. I have those on both of my 250r and have had good results. I see alot of good ideas being exchanged on this subject, just trying to sort out our solution.

I have a 300ex dual row carrier with a converted 300ex rotor hub with a 250R small rotor 85-89 250r. I do not see myself using it after 1 year. The 300ex carrier will fit in both 85/86 350x however on the 85 you need to removed the torque arm and have pin welded to the swinger to work with the 300ex brake stay. I have a custom made one of those also to run a YZ426 front caliper on it which is nearly identical for trx250R over priced one.

Let me know if you want it. Everythings new and powder coated. Been keeping it for a rainy day trike build but I cant find any 350x parts i need to start it.

I think I would be interested. I see someone on eBay selling new (likely Chinese) 85 spec rear caliper, master cyl, and caliper mount for $160. The mount bracket look like the correct config for the 85 swingarm

Be sure and read captainweezy's post about the Niche extended axle for a 300ex. Niche claims the splines for the sprocket hub are OEM but he found out they were not.

In Shawn's build, I believe he used the stock 350X brake hub on the 300ex axle. But sounds like oldskool can hook you up with his setup.

I didn't notice the Niche 300ex axle doesn't come with a sprocket hub. Derp! Lol!

This doesn't look too terrible, looks to include the sprocket hub https://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-Rear-...ry!13308!US!-1

Thanks for the tip. Good to know they are a good product. The influx of chinesium lately makes it tricky to know descent parts from junk these days
