I know nothing about these older JD lawn tractors except for the fact I want one really bad. There is a guy close to me who has a clean 214 for $500. Everything but the variable speed control works.

The 214 is one of the last, well built, garden tractors, in my opinion. It replaced the 140 in '75. The Kohler is a solid engine. If it's in good shape-$500 ain't bad. Good luck!
Seeing that the speed controller is broke-you gotta low ball him![]()

Okay John Deere fans, my buddy has a 420 mower with the 20hp Onan engine. It surges (dirty carb), has a leaking oil filter adapter (east fix), and needs a deck belt and a couple of deck springs (again easy fix). He's not fond of working on things beyond changing oil and is tired of messing with it and wants $600 for it. It has about 1300 hours on it. Looking at the price of these things, they are not cheap tractors. Watchya Think?

It's a 318, not a 420. I don't know why I thought it was a 420, but however, I bought it anyway. About 20 minutes worth of carb cleaning I had it running like a top and a new oil filter turned a steady drip into a dime sized spot since I parked it last night.
It has a 46 inch deck that I have to replace the tensioner spring, but it's in really good shape.
This is the first hydrostatic tractor I've ever owned so it's takes a little to get used to. I'm used to the foot clutch mowers.

Wasn't the 140 a hydro??? Where the 214 is a conventional gear drive with a separate clutch and brake pedal as opposed to the 110 and 112 with the single pedal on the left that served as both clutch and brake. I always thought the 210 and 214 were the replacement/upgraded version of the 110 and 112.
The 300 series were great tractors too. Every bit as well built as their 200 series counterparts. Same Kohler engines, only they were hydro... With the exception of the 322 and 330 which have in-line 3-cylinder Yanmars, one gasoline and the other diesel respectively.
I was looking at the manuals I still have for my 330 diesel awhile back, tractor alone with no implements tips the scale at 850lbs, the manual for my 50" deck states its shipping weight is 150lbs, plus I have wheel weights. All fueled and ready to mow my old Johnny weighs over 1000lbs! LOL! Heavy little mutha!
BKM: nice scoop with the 318![]()

Hey guys. If you don't already know, tractor data.com, has lots of info on these and the different engines they used on the 300 series. Sounds like by '83 they had they kinks worked out with the 2-cylinder onan.
I got a little hydraulic fluid leak coming from the rear that I can't seem to find. It's not bad, but enough to drive me crazy.
My tractor is an 85 with the Onan B43g engine. It has 12xx hours on it, but runs awesome.
