I looked in the 'World Class help' section for a thread like this, but didnt find one.
This is pretty straight forward for most, but i see too many damn loose shifters just munching away at shaft splines, its time to make a step by step guide to fixing a shifter that is loose on the shaft.
So, you've tightened that little bolt down all the way and its still loose? the gap is gone at the pinch and it just wobbles? Heres your fix:
I just did this to a 1983/1984 250R ATC shifter that i sold to BigdaddyVW185. These are notorious for loosening and shredding their splines and i didnt want him to ever have a problem with it considering he told me he'd bought a couple with poor descriptions and fitment.
The basic idea is to take a section out of the pinch gap to allow the shifter to clamp down harder or more effectively. You will only need to remove about as much material as the thickness of the hacksaw blade
materials needed: Vice, file, manual hacksaw, 6.0mmx1.0 tap
Here goes:
Clamp the shifter into the vice. Use a file to make yourself a guide for the hacksaw blade
Once you have a groove as a guide, hack out a little slice. Again, should only be about the thickness of the hacksaw blade youre using
CLEAN. blow out with compressed air, or run a wire brush, pipe cleaner, or rag through the splined hole. Then chase threads with a 6.0MMX1.0 tap to ensure no nasties are boogering your threads.
Assuming your loose shifter has not completely flattened your shift shaft splines, your shifter should now clamp down onto the shaft with more force than before and should fit snug.
