    1979 Honda Z50 - Transmission Issues

    This is a bit pre-emptive but a co-worker stopped me and asked if I did small engine repair, wonder why. Seems he has a 1979 Honda 50 that likes to drop gears on it's own when riding. To be honest the only part of a trike or quad I haven't been into is the transmission, not scared just cautious. I'd like to help this guy out and fix this thing. I'm thinking that this is going to be a case splitting endeavour; I just want to be honest to him as what the potential costs could be. If I have to remove the jug and split the motor, I might as well freshen everything up. Thoughts?

    I'll second the shift drum stopper. I've replaced several of them on my 70s, and one of them acted just as you are describing. It would shift all on its own, and another one was very hard to find gears, I had to keep moving the shifter to get it to shift.

    No case splitting needed , just remove the clutch cover and look Behind the large drive gear .

    Agree on shift drum stopper, I've replaced a handful. Not bad to do. Need a clutch removal tool.

    Might even have metal shavings in the shift drum had that happen a few times.
