83 250r vs 85 250r

other than the air/water cooling options what are the differences between the 83-85 250r? I may end up trading my ar-15 for a 83 but im not sure if there is a downside to the air cooled bike vs water cooled?

That's a nice looking 83 good price too, not sure what you value the ar15 but the R is good!

run across a lot of r's and that one looks very original and nice for the price. I know ar-15 vary a lot on price depending on condition. bike is well worth the 900. if your AR is worth more then need to negotiate some cash.

Nothing to worry about on the air cooled r's. they are pretty much bullet proof, ton of power and fun. if you are interested in a 2 stroke with a clutch go for it. you will not be let down

air cools are very durable, unless you live in a high temp area, the air cooled wont give you any probs. a few friends here have some air cools and if we ride in the summer, on desert trail rides no issues but if we hit the sand dunes and do some hillshooting, they start to over heat after a few runs.

i'm still talking to the guy about it. I went and looked at it tonight. It needs work on the front brake. he said the chain may need replaced. and the fender has a small crack someone tried to fix. It has been sitting for a while and fired on first kick. 1st and 2nd seem to sputter but I think its because the bike has been sitting for almost 5 years. He even has a brand new front tire he will throw in.
my ar-15 is a hesse. so it's mot the greatest as for value goes, which i think he isnt liking. but it does shoot awesome and I've never had a problem. We will see.

differences between the 83/85 250rs are 83 has a 5-speed trans, 86 has 6-speed. Aftermarket parts for the 85 are way easier to get then the 83. he is right in line on price but depending on your model of ar-15 (a2,a3) will depend on your trade value. If he hesitates to do the deal because of the brand of ar-15 I wouldn't throw money in the deal as the ar-15 will have a better shot at appreciating than the r will.

From what I have read on forums about Hesse ar-15's I would say trade it for that 250r even if you have to add money. I have never owned a hesse but many many many testimonial online to their poor quality in casting, maching and so forth. That ar will never appreciate with a bad reputation which they seem to have. My opinion of course.... I beleive most are only around 5-600 new anyway?? Not including add ons of course. I would snag that R in a minute if I were you.....

So long as that ar-15 is made to Mil-spec you are fine. People who drop double or triple the money for a colt receiver or some other brand are idiots IMO. Mil-spec insures the metal grade, tolerances and heating of the metal.

Be sure you transfer that AR-15 through an FFL (gun dealer) and have the background check run on him. He may seem like a good guy, you may even kinda know him. But if he has a felony, violent misdemeanor, documented history of mental illness or a restraining order in his past and you sell him the gun YOU are guilty of a FELONY under federal law. That's also a felony in every state btw.

Anyway I would post pics of the 83R on here for the experts on the boards to nit pick, that is your best bet!
