Cleaning jets with a welding tip cleaner

I am planning to buy a welding tip cleaner from a local auto parts store to clean a #95 main and #38 slow jet. The tool lists #6 as the smallest tip cleaner size, is that small enough? Has anyone had a negative experience with the tip cleaner, like it abrades the jet too much? The jets are so clogged that I think a carb kit is my only other option.

Your best bet is a good wire brush that you or I would pluck wires from with pliers and clean the jets. Save your money......welding tip cleaners are too big of a diameter....... They do not work in that small of an orifice.........compressed air, carb cleaner and swabbing of the jets with a tiny wire........again and again and again..... then 2 more times.....

I heard guitar strings work well also. Haven't had to try it yet, but sounds like a great idea!

I have always used the wire from an old clutch or brake cable it works great. Whatever you use be careful not to hog out the jets. The soft brass is easy to distort the hole making it flow more than it should.

No. #6 wire won't pass throught a Keihin slow jet, but it might on a Mikuni. Not worth the money if you are buying it just for this. If a hole is plugged shut I use a sewing needle to break through and then gently rotate it as I push it in. Then I use carb cleaner, toothbrush and even some 2000 grit sand paper if needed (only on the outside of the tube to get the fuzz off). Then a puff of air to make sure its clean. Use a light in the background to check for obstructions and odd shapped holes.

Xowner is right this is the tool, it goes much smaller then a welding tip cleaner, I have both. A wire fron a wire brush will also work.

Found a tip cleaner at a garage sale for 50 cents that goes down to a size ZERO that was small enough for most of the jets I was cleaning. A major score for me.

The rasp part of the tip cleaner was so rough that it seemed like it would ruin a jet in a hurry, so I plan to only use the wire part of each cleaner.
