May be picking this 1987 Honda 200X up for cheap money. Needs a lot of work

    Hello everyone,

I may be picking this 1987 Honda 200X up for some pretty cheap money this weekend. As you can see from the picture, it needs a lot of work. The guy said it doesn't smoke and runs excellent. For the mechanical side of things, he said it will need brakes and front wheel bearings. He installed new swingarm bearings and axle bearings last week.

It will need a full set of plastics, headlight and tailight, fork boots, seat/seat cover and other stuff.

The good news is the key switch is 'in tact' and works great.

He said he would sell it to me for $250.00. Let me know what you guys think.

    Thank you,
    IronBear

Its an '87 with a good key switch. Worse case scenario you could always make your money back and maybe a little more. I say go for it. Even clapped out you can't take away the fact its an '87.

Parting it out would make good on your investment if your restoration costs are too high.

That dash and key alone make it worth the price.

Try to decide if you want to tackle this. Start adding up the cost and now your up to 1000$.

You may find another 86/87 in better shape cosmetically, some as cheap as 600-200$

When I see a trike like that, it screams "No one maintains me, and add bit of that old oil" .

Again, I would have bought it just for the dash and key.

But I believe your gonna end up dumping allot of cash on something may be so easy to sell it.........

Geez, I don't know Bear. I agree with Dirtcrasher. It doesn't take much for the total to start climbing, especially when you start buying 'cosmetic' stuff. It looks like it just needs too much. But, in the end, if this is the trike you've always wanted, and have accounted for dumping at least another grand into it, then go for it!

I agree with both sides here - yes its an 87 and even though its shot - its still an 87. The key and dash on it are worth a pretty penny as well so i would get it and part it if you can not find the means to justify restoring her. Then again on the other hand if funds are of no issue i would but it and restore her. Its nice to see someone who takes the time to restore an abused trike and turn it into something gorgeous again.

It truly is...Full credit to anyone who's saved a trike from going to the scrap yard or getting parted out.

Thank you for all your opinions and suggestions. I'm going to buy this trike and decide what to do with it at a later date. If I can find parts for this at a reasonable price, than I may restore it. If not, I'll probably part it out, or do something else with it. I've owned a mint 87 200x and sold it for $2,100 a couple of years ago. This one is far from mint but it does have potential.

I like that, thats how I think. Get it see what you can find for parts you can always part it out and come out good. I have redone worse. I would look for an 86-87 200x parts bike and make 1 of the 2 and have some left over goodies.
Rebuilding and riding trikes everyday and lovin every minute.

Good thinking on the 86/87 parts bike pipeline! I'm using the money I make from my power equipment side business so this wouldn't be a loss at all by purchasing it.

Looks like a good project. I built up my 83 200x auto and my 81 250r and 83 300r from the ground up.The 250 and 300 sat as frames for 10-12 years before I built them back up.Lots of ebay and craigslist purchases. I have over a grand in my 83 300r motor alone.
