ATC 250R 86 and 1985 Colors: Which do Maier plastic match??

I am going to get a 250R soon...but I want to be able to replace some of the worn plastic with the Maier shiny plastic.

I heard the 85 is more reddish and the 86 has alittle orange tint. My concern is that since the 1985 and 1986 R's have a slight color variation if I order the New Shiney Maier plastic which year 250R do they match better?

    Thanks

    Darius

I've never noticed any color variations between my brother's 85 & my 86 before, nor any 85 & 86 for that matter.

I have Maier front and rear and shrouds on my 85 R. They dont match the tank or my factory front fender, which was off an 85. of course these are the older rougher finish fenders.

Maier's plastics don't exactly match factory colors. they are damn close, but don't exactly match on anything I've owned. fenders, disc guards, shrouds, number plates, etc.

The MAIER red stinks at least for the 85. Maybe if you buy every single piece and a different color tank (white??) it will look good - but my Maier rear fender is not even close to the factory front fender, tank or shrouds. Maybe if I leave it in the sun and pour gas and grease all over it will lighten it up a bit

I'll tell you they are close enough for me! But I bet ya Maier will even tell you their new stuff is NOT a factory match. I'm so glad they make them shiny now.

But If I re-outfit with Maier, I'm going for the 87 look. Red tank and white fenders and shrouds! :-D

I'd send you a nice picture but it doesn't show shades very well.

I don't know about the ATC's but at some point honda in their dirtbike line up had a red color and older models had an orang/red color. I can't imagine the 86 ATC to be more of an orange but I do not own an 86 just an 85ATC250R. Truly though - my 85 ATC had been stored for quite some time and I grabbed a used front fender off EBAY from a "low mile ATC" and I must admit that it had almost no scratches at all and matched my OEM stuff great. So at that point I had original tank and shrouds and a different 85 ATC front fender and they all matched very well and to my liking.

Then I got the brand new MAIER rear fender 85 ATC shiny and it is more - dark red than the rest and doesn't match at all. I'm not teasing you - if you want your ATC to look nice you may need to get all new plastic from one manufacturer but thats why I said grab another tank - I just wasn't sure if MAIER made one - I do know that CLARKE sells 250R tanks but I have not researched the 85 ATC 250R tank as mine is fine. So I just meant that maybe with all new Plastic and another manufacturers different color tank (white) - it may work for you.

I have the new shiny red plastic Maier tank shrouds on my 85250R and the color was a pretty good match with the tank, which is original. It wasnt perfect, but darn close. As for the 86-350X/200X-look on a 250R, I have that on mine, white fenders, red tank and shrouds, blue seat (I know, I know, the 350X tank white not red). Looks pretty good, I think anyways. If I could post a pic of it I would, but I dont know how. Yeah I've noticed some later model Honda dirtbikes look really orange and the 80's ones look red like our ATC's.

In other words either go with the 87 R look or

find an R that has some good plastic on it...unless you want to spend a fortune on new fenders from Honda.

    I got the message....

....now I need to find an R....they are plenty on ebay!

In 1988 The Honda CRs were more of a red than orangish-red of the 87 and earlier. I believe this color change is also apparent in the 88 TRX-250R compared to an 86 ATC250R.

I think the maier plastic is more of the red like the 88 models.

I really like the white plastic and red tank! I may do that someday.
