Just like the title says. I have quite a few Honda 70s. I would like to use the lights on them but not buy batteries for them all. I put lights on 1 of my ATC70s. There is no battery and it does not blow the headlights, what is the difference?

None of them should blow lights, unless maybe the regulator/rectifier is bad. Battery models take the AC from the stator/alternator and rectify it to DC and then regulate that. It shouldn't blow lights as the regulator keeps it below too high of a voltage that would otherwise damage the battery as well.

What lights are you using?
My guesses for differences:
- stator condition/age
- bulb or bulbs different or age
- engine RPM
If you want lights but have bulb issues, use one of those $15, little square, 2 wire dirt bike voltage regulators.
On just about every Honda ATC without a battery (except the 350 and late 250R), the lights are the regulator. You need both a headlight and tail light of the right wattage. My 84 110 was so sensitive when I put an LED marker light on it for a tail light, I blew both bulbs when I revved it.
The 2 wire regulator is easier to deal with.

OK, heres what I know about this situation. The key was missing on my first SL70. The lights are turned on with the key so I couldn't turn the lights on. I got a key from oldhondakeys.com. I turned the key to the lights on position and it worked! At a high cruising RPM it blew the low beam. So then I figured I needed all lights working like mentioned above and tried again. So this time I'm on high beam, tail light on, speedo light on, high beam indator light on. It blew them all at once other than the tail light. Again, at fairly low PRM, What sucks it this is a $40 sealed beam headlight. The rest of the bulbs were from DRATV and were correct voltage and wattage.
DRATV sells a head light (no bucket) that will take replaceable bulbs instead of sealed beams for around $25. They also sell one that will fit the 69-71 Trail 70 (CT70) bucket for under $10. So I buy the $10 light and put it in my 1970 CT70, same thing! Blew the speedo and headlight bulbs. So then I search the net and there are like thousands of reports of this, they must be run with a battery to keep the lights from blowing. There as to be a way around this since an ATC70 doesnt blow the lights.
I was looking for a regulator like the one posted above, with no luck. The one above looks great except it's 12 volts so that wont work for me.
I was also looking at the wiring diagram last light. The key switch has 6 wires and this shows which terminals are connected in each position. It looks to me like the headlight and speedo are received unregulated AC voltage. The tail light and horn receive DC voltage. I'm not really seeing a connection between the headlight and battery at all which is kind of puzzling. The headlight does come on with the key on engine off so obviously I'm overlooking something. But it still seems weird to me that the headlight and tail light are powered by different sources and I have never blown a tail light.

Sorry - I thought we were talking ATC/TRX. I have no clue about the SL.
I don't see a regulator in that diagram - just a rectifier. Maybe the battery is supposed to help regulate?
I'll study it some more - now I'm curious.
Any 1970's Honda 2-wheeler really. Upon rereading my first post it could have been a more clear.
I'm actually getting an XL70 ready to licence. Its basically ready other than a battery. If it came down to it I I'll buy a battery for this one but I'd like find an alternative for my others. I actually picked up this battery today for $10. Works great and what a deal. http://www.tractorsupply.com/wildgam...asedPricingCmd

I need a 12volt battery like that for my trailer brakes. They run $24 each. Maybe I will buy 2 6volt ones and save $4. LOL
At $10 I would just throw a battery in the 70 and be done with it. But that's me. LOL
Howdy
Yeah, I put that Tractor Supply battery in the XL70 I'm going to license. Some of my other bikes only get ridden a few times a year, I would like to permanently eliminate the battery on those. My cousin has an XL600, we talked about 2 of these in series for his battery as well. Lol.

There is a capacitor type of device that Mike with Motor Razzo sells to go in place of the Battery on the CT70. SL70, Z50,XL70, ETC.. I purchased one from him a few years back to use on my Z50 and trail 70's.

How much was it and do you have a link to the actual part? I'm not seeing it.

I think it was 20 bucks, He had them at Mid Ohio a few years back at the AMA Vintage motorcycle show/swap in July. But Mike is the guy to talk to. He makes them for all his Z50 and small Honda's to run them with out a battery. Mine is all shrinked wrap. I never cut it open to figure out what he used to make it work but it does.
