Is the value of trikes at its highest point today?

I didn't really get into trikes until about 09 while in the beginning of the great 2nd depression. I understand that values on trikes is different in different parts of the world. Canada seeming to be where trikes are worth there weight in gold for some reason. But I was wondering what were there bringing back in the good old days- pre recession.

I live in the midwest and keep a good eye on what they are selling for now. These are the prices I see them sell for in decent riding condition. With usually wear mostly needing some repairs like suspension and bearings. 350x usually see them go for around $1200. 85-86 250r around $1500 First gen 200x Around $600 etc...

So my question is are they at there peak value now? Or are they lower then 10 years ago. Just curious.

i think they are at there peek now. like you said they are worth there weight in gold up here in Canada. But i don't think a guy is going to pay 5 to 7G's for a 350x for 250r. Its just not going to happen, I wish i could find 350x and 250r's for $1200 to $1500

My point of view is it's cyclical and I only know about the midwest, northwest. I have been into three wheelers since the early 90's. After the ban, people couldn't give their trikes away and that's also the same time that a nice TRX 250R was going for about 5500. Fast forward to the early 2000's, liquid 250R's started spiking and you couldn't find a decent one for less than 3K. That's what welcomed in my infatuation for the air fooler and 200x because I could buy a decent rider at that time for approximately 1K, throw a little money into it and bam, I had a decent rider that looked good for about 1400. Fast forward to today and I can find a nice TRX that some guy has completely gone through for about 2500. Flip that to the trike side and a liquid cooled rider will cost approximately the same. So you are seeing the racing four wheelers come down and price and the three wheeled machines are making a comeback.

I attribute this comeback to two things. One, threewheelers are now 25 year old machines and people are starting to like them because they are vintage/rare, thus people want more money for them as the law of supply and demand denote. Another reason lately is all the publicity the OTC, William Casey, this site, s.com, 3WW.org, and others are creating by making wicked new age bikes and then racing them in public forums. For example, my friend who could care less about three wheelers saw an OTC video on YouTube the other day and said, "holy crap, how are those three wheelers being raced again?...I thought they were banned!??" Personally I think three wheelers are making a slow, but needed comeback.

So in summary, do I think this is the peak? No, but I do believe we are moving in the right direction for a helluva three-wheeled comeback. For the most part, and in my opinion, the trikes I see are fairly priced at this point.....unless you are in Canada...LOL

Ok just to clarify when I say at there peak I mean the highest price they have been so far as of today. Not that they have hit the highest acheivable price. I believe they will continue to increase in value as they get older.

As for guys asking 5-7 grand for a 350x or 250r in Canada thay would have to be in extreme amazing condition. We have goontards around here that ask that much for theres but thats all it is is asking they aint gonna get that much.

Part of the reason the TRX 250r was so valuable was because thats about all there was to race until the 450s hit the showroom floor. The 450s really lowered the demand for the R. Good for guys wanting to buy but sucks for guys that bought high and are stuck with them now.

Don't forget to consiter what a buck is worth these days compaired to 10 years ago as well. If something was selling for $2,000 in 2002 and its still at $2,000 today it actualy went down. According to a site I just looked at on the Internet the rate of inflation in the USA from 2002 to today is 26.2%.

A little off topic are the prices that the mid 80's RZ500 and RG500 2 strokes are selling for. They cost the equivelent of about $3,500UDS new in Canada and they are selling for as much as $25,000 in mint condition these days. Maybe some day our trikes will command those kind of bucks

Yep Yeagerb... I remember how cheaply a NICE ATC could be picked up for in the early 90's. In '91 a friend of mine picked up a cherry, and I mean CHERRY '86 200x for $425. Had DG exhaust, twist throttle, Honda service manual, extra set of 18" Turf Tamer type tires on rims. Front tire was not original, but the rears were. Wish I could go back to that time again!

In '95 I picked up my first R. It was an '85, mostly stock, ran great. Just needed an axle carrier. Paid $200!

As to the original question. It's my opinion that they really can't go too much higher. Basically I think that alot of people will start to compare what the asking price on a 25 year old 250r is compared to a nice 3 or 4 year old 450r quad. Yeah, you might get the ocassional buyer that will pay a crazy price for an all original trike, but as a rule I think most people won't pay more for an old trike than they could get a newer quad for... Just my take on it.
    Trikes:
    '85 ATC 350R
    '85 ATC 250R
    '86 ATC 350X
    '85 ATC 350X
    '84 ATC 200ES Big Red
    '84 ATC 125M
    '85 ATC 110
    '85 ATC 70/110

location location location. last year, I sold a nice 350x with a title, and a 87 200X with title. for 1300 bucks. a few years, before the crash of the stock market etc. I sold a nice 87 200X for 900 with a title.
I sold another 87 200X a 84 250R titled and a atc 70 for 1900 bucks. last 85 200X I had with aftermarket exhaust, decent plastics tires etc. running no papers I threw in a running 185S ( I had $450) in both trikes and tried selling them seperately for 500 and 300
ended up trading both of them for a M1 garand rifle a couple months ago. Im down to 3 complete atc70's. I have 2 project atc70's on craigslist. 1 pops out of 1st, the other doesnt spark, enought parts to make one decent trike and have enough parts to bolt the second one back together, advertised local for $225 for both with pull starts complete trikes. NO calls at all. So tucson in general is on the low end of the price scale. jim

The sad reality is they are worth far more as parts than as whole machines. Look at the near mint bikes being parted out on ebay and that will tell you where the demand is.

    I'm scared a little too.
Used to get parts trikes that may even run for 100$ with good tires or some other redeeming factor.
    Now?
300 for parts junk with 200$ worth of parts,
ugly runners that need a few days work for 500

and something you can jump on but needs a days work for 800.

also seen reasonable machines for 1200 - 2500 and they Ain't perfect.

Did someone put trikes in a new movie or something?

Who's scared? I'm waiting on the days when my trikes are worth a ton. Yes it's nice to pick up a atv for next to nothing but that also opens the door for less then desirable people that just want something cheap to buy and destroy. A persons asking price and actual selling price are 2 different things. I can ask $2500 for a bike too but nobodys gonna buy it either, then some idiot sees $2500 for that bike and now theres must be worth at least that much. Alot of people on CL list a total pile of a bike for a random super stupid price and now suddenly every one is trying to set the price of there turd higher. heres an example. http://carbondale.craigslist.org/bar/3212143037.html
