ATC 70 Head? Rebuild or new from dr atv?

Well i restored my little atc 70. Started on the first pull but blew alot of blue smoke when you got on it, and when it idled, So i figured id tear it down and this is what i found. Do you think the head and valves could be saved? There really carboned up. I am gonna go with the 88cc kit from dr atv for 109.00 for piston and cylinder or the one on ebay for 69.00. not sure yet. it was the original piston

clean that carbon off with some paint remover or brake cleaner. remove valve retainers. buy a valve lapping kit and lap them really good. then all you need to do is clean it in some solvent and install new seals. your piston and rings/bore is where your smoke is coming from this is if you needed to do the valves

that cyl is wasted. just buy an 88 kit from one of your sources listed..... i wouldnt tear into that head, i have been down that road before. once you pull the valves you'll find that they are junk too. dr atv has a good deal on a new head that comes with valves. i bought one and it is the way to go.

i just looked and cant find the head kit that i bought but i know it was $69.00 plus shipping. its tough to put alot of money into these old motors as you quickly find out that you could have just bought new lifan for roughly the same price.

    Which liflan engines will fit?
    Are they direct bolt in?

Do you have a link for them?

All of the "horizontal" engines, but it's hard to use the electric start engines if the starter is mounted above the engine.

    Yes and no.
They bolt to the frame no problem and the chain lines up.
You have to address some issues:
    - carb/manifold configuration and tank clearance
    - footpeg clearance on some models
    - how are you going to start it? they all kick backwards but you can use an e-start engine or adapt a pull starter
    - wiring, especially for e-start

Ditto on the lifan i just put a giovanni 125 manual in my 85 atc 70, ibelieve they are basically made in the same factory in china. Very simple swap i only needed to bend the exhaust and dent the inside of the tank for the carb. The power these things make is great and they are pretty well stone cold reliable with simple maintenance

Thanks for all the replies. I went ahead and ordered the 88cc kit, hd valve springs, race cam, and new valve guide seals from dr atv. We tried lapping the valves but i could still see a faint pit mark in one of them so I brought the entire head to my buddy's dad who has built engines for years. He did a complete valve job on my head and the valves at his shop for free. All tolerances were checked and everything turned out awesome! Pays to have the right equipment. Should make a big difference when it goes back together.

Good deal on the head. If you were gonna buy a new one I was gonna inquire what you were gonna do with the old one! Replacing the whole head isn't part of a normal rebuild.
