fourtrax 250 and 300 shaft engines

i have seen that the 250 and 300 fourtrax shaft driven engines look alot like the 250sx engines and was wondering if they were interchangeable and if they were any better performance wise over the sx engines

They are similar but I dont think the sx has reverse. I get my Honda utility trikes confused, but I think its the 250es which is the same behind the gas tank. My TRX250 was an 86.

I believe the 250es 250sx and the 250trx quad all have the same engine and transmission.

Same thing for the most part. I used a fourtrax 250 engine in my BigRed. The only differences I noticed was the right case cover has a sender for the oil tempature warning light on the fourtrax. I guess that it was harder to keep the foutrax cool because it had all the plastic in front. The motor was scorched when I rebuilt the top end.

I think that the TRX engines would fit in the SX chassis without any problems. Making the shaft out-put on the engine meet the shaft on the s-arm would be the hard part....unless you could swap the whole rear end. But I think the easier thing would be to take the TRX and cut off the front end and put a trike front end on it...

There is also rumor that the ES has different speed gears in the motor tranny and the rear end. I have both the ES motor and the SX motor in pieces but haven't had a chance to split them and count teeth.

I will say this though - my 85SX engine does not have the same number of teeth described in the CLYMER manual - they are all off by 2 or more teeth and it is an SX motor.

Someone with an ES and SX HONDA Service Manual may be able to clarify the gearing in the trannies but I'd sure be pissed if I built an ES or other motor and tossed it in an SX chassis and it got even slower :?
