    Exclamation 1984 Yamaha 200e Shaft Problems

    Hello, 3 Wheelers. As I have posted in the New Member Discussion, we are making some good progress with the Trike that I own. It is a 1984 Yamaha 200e Shaft and needs some MAJOR repairs on it. Right now, we just want to make sure it even runs first, and so far we've just been able to fire it up twice. Now, it won't fire up again after our last start up since June 13th this year. We were thinking the reason why it isn't firing is because there is maybe something wrong with the starter pull area (basically in the Magneto). So... if everyone knows how to fix this, we would be VERY appreciated!

    I guess the way you described the problem was very vague, and out there, it dosent tell us what you tried to do with it, what you checked for, how long it had been sitting, or even why you think the magneto may be bad. Does the machine have spark? Getting clean gas? Air filter free of obstructions? Got good compression? There are about a thousand things it could be as of right now. WE NEED MORE INFO.

    It doesn't have spark, which makes me think the Magneto is causing it. I'm giving it clean gas, Cleaned out Air Filter, It's missing the Battery itself, Battery Cover, Front Brake Line, Plastics are starting to fade off the paint, We just cleaned out the Gasket, it has runned twice over the past one or two months, It's got all the wires still intact. When we fired it last time, we had to pull the choke and throttle at the same time, plus pulling the starter wire (obviously). But this may sound strange, but I think my trike is actually a Tri-Moto because on the back it says Tri Moto:


    Now, ever since the last time we started the trike up (I think 2-3 weeks ago), it would not fire after that. Need I say more?

    If its got no spark i would go through every component of the ignition system starting at the stator/magneto and work your way through all the wiring connections and testing every component one by one. That's the only way to find a problem is by stepping through it.

    I would pull and clean the carb also as from the sound of it your carb is messed up, having to hold the throttle with the choke on it probably has a blocked jet/passageway in the carb from sitting. Soak it, clean it, put a carb kit in it.

    The exhaust condition probably isn't helping either. My 84 Honda was acting weird even with a new carb, it was running rich and had poor acceleration, turned out the exhaust was rotted like yours and the packing was moved around in the muffler and choking off flow. After putting on a new exhaust the problems all went away.

    You might also want to put in a new spark plug and check the compression as well. I don't have a lot of experience on the Yamaha's but its like any of these small four strokes, you just have to make sure you got spark, fuel, air, and everything working right. Not sure if the manual for these is available here on the site, but your probably going to want to find a wiring diagram at least to go through it all.

    I forgot to mention that we've cleaned out the carb and got a new spark plug. I'll try and look through the magneto today and see what the problem might be. I've got the manual which tells me the wiring setup for the whole trike, so I'm good. I'm also looking for an exhaust, unless if someone here lives in Ontario, Canada who can offer me an exact Exhaust that's in good condition, I'm gonna have to make a custom.

    This is just a question. Are these the original stock tires of the 1984 Yamaha Tri-Moto 200e Shaft "Yamahauler"?

    No those are not the original tires. Get yourself a volt meter, and start troubleshooting the electrical system, just as the manual tells you to. Have you checked out the ignition coil? I have seen a few times, especially on yamaha, where the coil would crack (you can see it) and the spark would jump from the coil to the frame, and make no spark at the plug. Also, have you tried unplugging the kill switch? Otherwise, follow the manual, and you will eventually find the problem.
