I am kinda leaning towards buying a bike. I have a chance to pick a 2002 cr250r for $1500. It looks very nice and it has a pro circuit pipe on it. Are they good bikes? How are the reliability-wise?
thanks

1982 honda atc185s- for sale-p.m. me if interested
1985 honda 200x
That was a great bike in 2002. It's all about how well it was taken care of with used dirt bikes.
I made the mistake of buying a cheap 04 yz250 recently. It was only $1500, good deal right? Not really. I knew it was going to need some stuff but after i got it home and looked it over was when i realized I had made a mistake.
Look at the fork seals and see if there is any evidence of leaking. - new fork seals 170$ installed.
Stand behind it and make sure the subframe is straight.
Check the bearings in the wheels, and the steering.
Take a good look at the chain and sprocket.
If you have a compression tester it is an easy way to see how much life is left in the piston. A new piston will have over 200psi. A weak piston will have 170psi or less.
All this stuff was bad on my bike. I put new plastic and a pipe on it and I am re listing in hopes of breaking even. I'm not sure if the 02' CR's have a nikasil cylinder or not. The difference is an extra 300-500$ depending on if the cylinder is scratched badly.

They were reliable as any Honda. They were Nikasil, all 250s went Nikasil from '86 or '87. I think either the '02 or '03 was the start of the electronically controlled powervalve. I've heard it was a lot stronger than the '00 and '01. Also make sure you check the rear shock linkage bearings, they seem to be a big wear item.

Also like to thank my sponsor for the Trikefest 2013 Devil's Backbone hill climb in reverse Eric Jensen, without him this would have never been possible.....literally!!!!
Also make sure you look under the bike for leaks or cracks in the case. Most people forget to do this and it can be a big money mistake!
