    Rewind a recoil?

Ok, so the previous owner of my YT125 put the recoil on backwards, so it was extremely hard to start. flowmasterman helped me diagnose this. I took off the recoil and I was switching the rope around so it would actually turn the engine the right was, and I bumped the spring and it came flying out. now what? should I try to get it back in myself or bring it to a repair shop? If I try to do it myself, does anyone have any instructions or tips on how to compress the spring?

You dont compress the spring, you wind it in by hand a little at a time. Start by hooking the end on the inside of pullstart case, and hold it with one hand. Next start to wind the spring into position with your other hand, making sure to hold it at the start, and in the middle of each wind. You have to switch hands after each half wind. Its much easier to show you in person that try to tell you. Just start by hooking it, and you can kind of see where it is going after that. Its not hard at all once you get the hang of it. Good luck!

could you show me a picture or something? maybe a video? I think I kind of understand what you are saying. take the outside end of the spring, the part with the little hook on it, and hook it on one of the tab things. then take the inside of the spring and turn it little by little. actually i have no clue.

I just did a 125M and used the two nail trick. Nail two nails about 1" apart on a board, put the inside of the spring around the nails hooking the inside bend on one nail, pull it tight and wrap the loose outer part up (may take a few pulls), then vice grip the small part when it's wrapped tight around the nails. Put it in the housing and slowly release the vice grips. It'll unwrap where you have it.

when you are rewinding the rope, use a big clamp to hold the center part of the recoil start so it dont fly back. also handy for when putting your handle back on just thought id throw this out since i recently rewound a 200e pull starter.

Good info from a fella that has the knack for anything with springs. From kick starters to pull starters (and dang near every thing else on a trike).

Well I figured it out. I used the two nail trick. It worked great. Only took me about 10 minutes to get the whole recoil finished. going to put it back on the trike tommorow and go for a ride.
