    trx250r visual differences?

What are some of the visual differences between 86-89 trx250r? I might want to trade one of my ATC 250r s for one. I would really like to tell the difference between the 86/87 and 88/89.

I know that the 86/86 had a flat hood w/ light mounted on the handlebars
I also know that 88/89 had the headlight mounted in the hood plastics

Is there any obvious signs? I think there is a difference in the footpegs, right?

Don't go by body panels as defining the year of the bike. Guys changed these things around like underwear. The 86/87 bikes had the same swingarm and rear engine mount as the 86 ATC. The 88/89 bikes used a aluminum swingarm and used a solid rear engine mount that was welded to the frame. also the 86/87 bikes had footpegs that bolted to the frame using two bolts similar to the atc's. The 88-89 bikes had a round tube with a tab welded to it and used one bolt. These are just a few. there are actually many differences but these are the ones that stand out.

There are a few other differences but the 88-89 is a much better bike to ride.....faster and better handling so if you get the choice buy a 88-89.....

I have heard that the handling is better on the 88/89 as well, but the motors are virtually the same. Small changes here and there, right?

The biggest difference is the 1988 1989 had a pivot foot peg. 1986 1987 had a rigid peg tht didn't move. Biggest differences

Ok so I am looking at this trx250r. Im pretty sure its a 1986/7. What do you guys think? Here are the pictures I got from the seller.

It looks like a 86 swingarm and footpegs right?

Yep its an 86/87. The lower motor mounts will tell you if its an 86 or an 87. The 86's were a little beefier.

Good good, looks like you guys have taught me well when it comes to identifying the difference between the two gens of trx250r s.

    Thanks.

Another question, more specific to this bike.

The guy is asking $800 bucks for it.
    not running
    possible bad stator
    no cracks/bends in frame
    new holeshot tires and rims
    good compression
    full exhaust
    painted plastics

what do you think? good deal?

I think its not a bad deal, but i am worried about about the electrical problem i could be facing. i have never dealt with something like this before.
    what do you guys think?

$800 is a good deal and electrical system is simple on these bikes. I have a good 89 stator if you need one. The plugs are different from the 86 but you can splice on your old connector.
