Thxs folks. I will try this next. I will add a filter and check the vent on the tank. I might even swap tanks with the 85 so the pit cock dont leak.

the petcock its self is a diffrent issue reguardless of wither the shut off is working or not if the carb and the float are functioning properly than you wouldnt lose the tank of gas unless you removed the feed line from the tank to the carb. your float is hung up causing the carb to flood and if you have been thru three carbs than the filter on the petcock in the carb is shot so either replace that or put a inline filter in clean the carb and the needle valve and you shouldnt have any more issues

so did you get it fixed. im pretty much in the same boat. carb nearly drained out all the tanks fuel on the floor. so i check the float height and it was off. so i fixed the height and problem solved. or so i thought. next day still fuel but not as much. then i discover the petcock is letting fuel flow through. so i see the four hole gasket is torn and i have a new one ordered tomorrow. maybe i didnt set the float height fully correct because i never had a gauge. does it need to be off by much to leak?

I was having this problem too when I first got my R. It can be very frustrating. I used q-tips to clean my float valve seat. It was dirty. Replaced the float valve needle. It was scored. The best way I found to adjust the float height is, with the bowl off, hold the carb LEVEL up to your face and blow in the fuel line inlet. with the float hanging down, you should be able to blow through easily.

As you push the float up, you should have a harder time blowing into the fuel line. Right about the time the float become parallel with the bottom sealing surface of the carb, you shouldn't be able to blow in anymore. If if shuts off too soon, you will be running out of gas. If it shuts off too late, you will have overflow problems.

Mosh could be on to something with getting gunk from the tank. I always use a filter between the tank and carb...

You should probably move your needle jet clip back to the position it was in before, as it affects jetting.
