Trx 250r swinger on atc 250r

I just got a great deal on a trx 250r. Dont know what year but was told the 86 uses the same swinger, axel and rear shock as the atc. And I previously bought the rear shock off buddy. And it dosent look like the atc shock. So im thinking i have an 87? Anyways what all if there is any mods that can/need to be done to use this set up?

the swingarms changed in 88 when the trx got a makeover so no, cant use. my cuz has an 87 trx and tried to use an aftermarket carrier that works in the 85/86 ATC's only to find it was literally 1/8 inch too small in diameter to successfully mount in the rear of the swingarm. impossible to lock it down. carrier fits fine in the 85/86 ATC. do your homework before trying to mix and match ATC/TRX rear end parts. i would stick to 86/87 TRX parts, there are plenty of them out there....my $0.02

I THINK!!!!,,, all of you need to do a little homework before posting,,
#1 85 atc is a one year , swingarm and carrier are different from all others,,,
#2 86 atc and 86-87 trx share the same swingarm and carrier,,,
#3 88-89 trx are different the swijgarm will not fit a earlier trx or a atc,,, machine work is involved to ues them these are FACTS ,,, so QUIT with the i think crap,, it gets to confusing . if you don't know for sure just wait till someone that knows chimes in.

side note trx shocks have a different length hose to the nitrogen canister ,atc short trx longer ,,,,

Kasey: you can put an 86 carrier and axle in an 85 swingarm. thats what i have in my 85. and what i said about the ATC carrier not fitting in the 87 TRX is no BS....all i know is that it was impossible to make work as the carrier was clearly much to small in diameter. i have no idea why, because we (those of us involved in the build) thought they were the same.

no, you must have a 86 swingarm. 85 was a one year only for the swingarm, carrier, axle, bottom shock bolt/bushings, shock and brake stay. 86/87 trx used nearly the same swingarm stuff has 86 atc, the only difference was the shock itself(atc has a wider top mount, shorter hose and hose at a different angle) and 87 trx had a different dogdone and a shorter shock than the 86 trx. When 88 came along, a different aluminum swingarm(~1" shorter), different linkage bolt(dogbone-swingarm), different brake stay bushing and replaceable bolt that the bushing rode on. Also in 88 the swingarm became solid and rear motor mount was moved to the frame, those years used a even shorter shock and same dogbone as 87. I had a 85 and put in a 86 swingarm, 86 carrier and 86+ bottom shock bolt/bushings, as I bent the 85 bolt(smaller diameter), I was using a 88 trx aftermarket shock also. I then switched it to a 86 frame and kept the rear end the same, I did replace the carrier. At some point in time I got a 86/87 trx +1 swingarm and shock for it. I switched to a another 86 frame and the rear end stayed the same. I then got a frame custom made and it had the rear motor mount in the frame, so I put a piece of pipe between the swingarm where the rear mount would sit.

READ MY POST,,,, I AM STATING FACTS.... been there still have the knowledge and the caliper readings,,,
very simple way to see that i am right, an 85 swinger has a link arm to the brake caliper holder from the swinger , like yours does .. 86 has a pin welded in the swinger less than an inch from carrier that the brake stay rides on,, an 85 carrier is smaller and has a 3/16 wide flange for adjusting.. here is a pict of the difference 85 left 86 right THEY WILL NOT INTERCHANGE

So if kaseys post is true I have the 86 swing arm. Hell I might even have the trx set up and dont know it. This model had a funny brake holder bracket for the trx if that helps.

Got no pics but it went together ok I guess. Didnt use the trx shock due to the dog bone was toats on it. But looks way better now. Best 200$ I spent on a honda. But a swinger swap on a 250r vs a Tecate. Tecate wins by a alot of how easy it is.
