troubles with my 82 honda 185

I just got my dads old three wheeler running. It doesn't run the best yet. It idles only when you hold the choke lever down.. It doesnt help to move the adjustment screw unless you hold it down. It looks to me that there is a place where a cable end should fit into the lever though. Is there supposed to be a cable there? Also when I drive, it will go about twice as fast when I hold the lever down but will start to pop and sputter and eventually die even when i mess with the lever. Any thoughts or ideas? All help is appreciated!
    Thanks
    Hans

You shouldn't have to hold the choke down, it should stay on its own.

I concur with louk, 90% of the time it's the carb that just needs to be taken apart & cleaned, maybe a new kit. Also check the tank make sure its doesn't have particals from sitting. let us know how it goes kid kash.
