Question Honda 125m First & Second Generation Differences

    Hey,

I was just wondering what the differences are between a 1984-85 first generation Honda 125m and a 1986-87 second generation 125m.

Also, why did the Honda 125m's not come with any suspension?

    Thanks guy.

The later model 125's are more like a minature 185s as in the upright motor and tube frame design. I suppose there was no suspension to keep the price down as they were more of an entry level/light duty ATC.

The difference... Everything! The only similarities i know of are wheels, tires, and of course some nut and bolt interchangeability. Make no mistake, they are entirely different machines. 86-87m's are really cool machines that are unfortunately very difficult to source many parts for. I go to TF every year and have only seen a few in all those years. I've never seen a decent example there, or anywhere else for that matter. They were considered an entry level machine that needed to be affordable. Engineering suspension into the package would raise price, and require a higher seat height in most cases. Both bad for the beginner 3wheeled enthusiast.

Here is a pic of my 87 125m . Bought it with trashed rear fenders and no tank so I had to settle for 86's but it makes a great utility trike for my yard work . Reverse is awesome

Wow, that is a very nice trike. Did those aluminum rims come stock with the trike? Also, why do some of the 86-87's not have the reverse option?

    Thanks bud.

    Hey,

I'm about to grab a 1986 Honda 125M, however, it does not seem to have reverse. It also has a small oil leak from what I was told and it needs a pull cord. Other then that, the bike is in really good shape.

After looking at the pictures I was given, it appears that the motor does not face up words like your does, the motor actually looks different then yours.

    Thanks bud.

If you have the laydown motor it is not an 86-87.

Dam, that is what I was thinking. That would also explain why it does not have reverse either. However, when I asked him, he said it is for sure a 1986. It also has 5 gears and the 84-85's only had 4 gears.

Would you like me to post some pictures?

    Thanks bud.

why is the motor bigger on the upright head than the lay down head? seems like the late model 125 has a bigger motor like a de stroked 185 motor.

Ironic, I rode my Daughters 85' 125m alot today, they're a blast, not ridgid for being non-suspended, they just bounce. Just put mx bars on it today for her. Now I just need to know where and what kind of twist throttle to put on it. It's the best trike we have, no problems, jus' one pull and go!

Definately 84-85. I've seen it 1000 times. People who either don't know better, don't care, listened to what the previous owner told them, or have just had the machine so long they got mixed up. The guy definately has the year wrong.

Yes that is def a first gen. Check the VIN here if you want to have something to show the guy: http://atcvin.webs.com. Also, I bet if you look on the neck of the frame it will have the sticker right there in plain sight that will say 1984 or 1985 lol
