Gordons Well (Imperial Sand Dunes)
GPS: 32.715052,-114.940703
Directions: Interstate 8 West of Yuma, AZ. The exit is clearly marked "Gordons Well". The camping area is north of the highway. Take a right at Even Hewes Hwy to head towards the camping area. You'll cross a canal and (typically) some rangers looking for permits. If you run into a little bar, you went left when you should have went right.
Rules: Parking/camping permit required for every vehicle (ie: truck, RV, etc). Each OHV is required to either have state registration or for non-residents, a non-resident permit can be bought. Availble online, at the Glamis Beach Store, local motorsports shops or on busier weekends from the checkpoints entering the camping areas. Online is typically the cheapest route for purchasing passes. AZ residents who have a plate and OHV decal no longer need the non-resident permit. Helmets are required for everyone on a bike or ATV. Whips are required for all vehicles in the riding areas. Speed limits enforced near crowds of people and campgrounds. Rules are VERY strictly enforced.
Review: Having perhaps a more family friendly atmosphere than Glamis, Gordons Well offers much of the same thrills as it's more famous neighbor. The drag strip and Test Hill are the main attractions. The highlight for me however is twisting the bowls which Gordons Well offers up in great abundance.
