What oil should I use in my ATC?

I have a 1982 Honda ATC185s and I was wondering if any of you folks had some suggestions on what weight oil i should put in it. i'm thinking 0w40 amsoil.

Don't use 2 stroke oil in a 185s ....... do use a motorcycle oil to protect your clutch though

i would use whatever they used back in 1985, sure oils are more advanced now but those motors arent built for newer oils. use a regular old 10w40 , think about it, you hear stories about hondas sitting for 7 years in a snow bank and when some one finds it and thaws it outit starts right up. dont get fancy

I use Valvoline atv oil 10w-40. You can use any atv or motorcycle oil as long as it says it's for wet clutches. I would hesitate to use synthetic though.

I don't know if the manual calls for as light of weight as 0W, I think 5W is the lightest they say to go. I think they make a 5W-40. But really I would just run some 5W30 in the winter and 10W40 in the summer. I just switch my oil from 10W40 to the 5W30 and my kicker on the 200X hasn't slipped since. The spring definitely likes the lighter oil.

Recommended - SAE 10w-40 (SE or SF).

I use Valvoline ATV oil.

But in winter the 10-40 is a bit heavy. My kickstarter gears are thanking me for the 5W30 (even though the 185 in question is a different set up). If it was in a heated garage though 10W40 should be fine.

But Valvoline oil is great, I use Valvoline motorcycle and its great stuff.

i run honda gn4 ( black and red bottle) 10-40 in my 200x.. and cant complain, ran the same oil in my trx 250x, ran it in the trans on both my blasters,

I have always ran the Honda GN4 10W-40 in all my machines including the tranny's on 2 strokes with no problems. Just my .02

In my Blaster's tranny, the previous owner didn't take care of it and was putting used gear and motor oil in it, so to clean it out I used ATF type F and flushed it several times. Get it hot, flush it. And repeat. Then Bel-Ray 80w, but it looks like ATF. For 2 stroke oil, I use Lucas semi-synthetic or full synthetic. For f4 strokes, Rotella conventional 10w-40 for summer and 5w-30 for winter. Rotella conventional doesn't have any additives in it that are bad for the wet clutches. As far as using 0w-40, I wouldn't because it just seems to thin for these little motors. But thats just my $.02.

So are you guys saying use the same oil in the subtranny too? I am replacing the front sprocket on my 200e and waiting for it to come in the mail. The manual does not cover the oil in the subtranny or how much to put in it at all. I just assumed it was gear oil and not regular engine oil.
