I have an 85 250r and was wondering what is different on the 86 ?
I have an 85 250r and was wondering what is different on the 86 ?
alot, more than most people think. Its almost 2 completely separate bikes. The big ones are forks(more cc's of oil), rear end, headlight and frame.
85 was more of a stiff ride, the 86 was a little more plush ride.
The 85 is faster through the first 3 gears, but the 86 will take it afterward.
Forks are the same!
Foot pegs are beefed up on the 86.
the 86 had a more plush seat.
The motor is exactly the same, frame has a few differences like threaded motor mounts on the 85, and different size rubber garments on the 86 etc..
^ The 86 has a 6 speed tranny.
THE 80's RAGE! Currently owns:
81, 85 Yamaha Tri Moto 125
83 Yamaha Tri Moto 200 x2
82,83 Yamaha Tri Moto 175 project
85 Yamaha Tri Z 250
84 Kawasaki Tecate 250
84 Honda ATC 70
85 Honda ATC 350X
84 Honda ATC 250R
(2) 84 Honda ATC 200x
82, 83 Honda ATC 185s
81 ATC 200
Lots of other parts and bikes
KASEY has a thread on 3wheelers.org dedicated to this very question. There are quite a few differences.
85 forks hold 400cc's and 86 forks hold 465cc's, I see the internals are the same. 85 uses one big spring and one small spring, 86 uses 1 big spring, maybe that why it is rated to hold more oil? Because of the different spring. The biggest thing about the frame is the angle or the rake,. it more suited to stability, where the 85 is better for turning. The reason the 85 motor is faster in the first 3 gears is because of cylinder porting, flywheel weight and head gasket, thats atleast is all stock configuration. Reeds and intake boot(cyl-carb) is different, so is the carb, the 85 is round slide and 86 carb is flat slide. When you compare the 2, its basically 2 different machines. I switched a 85 frame to a 86 frame and kept everything else the same on the chassis, the difference was huge, it didn't turn as fast, but far more stable in almost everything else. The more you look, the more differences you find. There is something like 100 different parts about it, same goes for the 85 and 86 350x, there is almost as much differences for them. Both model trikes(with exception of plastic color) look exactly the same. Both are great trikes, nevertheless. The motor also used a different clutch setup, clutch bearings, kicker gears and something about the gears.
yeah, 85's had different clutch parts. Clutch plates, bearings, gears and kicker gears were different on 85. 86 trikes were nearly identical to 86 trx motor, the only difference being head gasket. Almost everything between a 85-89 motor interchanges, there was 4 generations of LQ 250r motors, 85, 86, 87 and 88/89. 86's got different clutch parts, kicker gears, internal gears and clutch bearings. 87 got stronger internal gears(1-3), long rod crank, bridged cylinder, different piston, different crank gear and different clutch lifter. 88 got a different crank(same specs as 87), totally different gears and different clutch lifter, different cylinder, kickers gears, crank bearings, kicer shaft, water pump, clutch cover and head. 89 got a different head, clutch lifter and stator. Many don't realize how much is different because to the over 20 years since the newest 250r and parts have been swapped from 85-89 motors.

Wow. I never would have thought there would be so many differences.
85 Tri-Zinger 60
85 ATC250SX
86 ATC250SX
87 ATC250SX
02 XR650L conversion
84 ATC 480R
but all of the clutch parts will interchange right? sorry for asking, I didn't know this.
Just think, I missed the finer details about updated motor parts, each year motor had different reeds, head and weight flywheel. If you want to list the differences simply between a 85 and 86 atc250r, its a huge list, yes, even the motor mounts and radiator brackets are different. To list the differences between 86-89 trx's it will take several pages to list. Yeah, the clutch parts will interchange. A common swap is the 89 clutch lifter setup for older motors and trx fibers in atc's. My motors are a combination of 85 and 86 parts, along with 88/89 cranks. I have one 88 motor, I think I put a 85 clutch basket, crank gears and shifting linkage in it.
